The Kia Niro is getting what looks to be a full redesign for the 2023 model year, including updated exterior styling, and will take a bow at the upcoming 2022 New York International Auto Show. The current Niro is a front-wheel-drive-only faux-SUV hatchback available as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or all-electric vehicle. Kia says all three powertrains will be available on the 2023 Niro, though it’s not clear if all-wheel drive will join the lineup or if it will remain FWD-only.

According to Kia, the new Niro borrows much of its exterior look from the Habaniro concept that bowed at the 2019 NYIAS. That includes an Audi R8-esque airblade feature behind the C-pillar, which appears to be painted in either a contrasting black or matching the body color; the Habaniro concept had a spicy red version, but it’s unclear whether more color options will be available. Kia calls it an “aerodynamic panel,” which implies that it has some actual functionality as opposed to simply being a styling element.

It also wears more angular exterior styling than the current Niro and looks a bit like the old Dodge Caliber, particularly from the rear. The front styling, including angular LED headlights, is in line with Kia’s current design language.

Few other details besides the new exterior styling and continued availability of three powertrains are currently known, though Kia promises “a cabin brimming with technology, driver assist features and generous cargo capacity.” We should know more next week when the new 2023 Niro debuts, so stay tuned.
