2024 BMW X1: Small SUV, Big Jump in Base Prices

BMW’s compact X1 SUV got a little less little for the 2023 model year, with a complete overhaul leaving it slightly longer, wider and taller than before. When the redesigned X1 launched, it was only available in xDrive28i trim, but for 2024, the M35i xDrive joins the lineup for buyers who want to offset a slight increase in size with a big jump in output.

Powertrains and MPG
Both versions of the 2024 X1 are powered by turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines. The xDrive28i’s makes 241 horsepower and 295 pounds-feet; the M35i’s generates the same amount of torque, but its horsepower leaps to 312, which BMW says makes it the most powerful four-cylinder engine offered in any of the brand’s vehicles. The only transmission available is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, and as the xDrive in their names denotes, all X1s are all-wheel drive.
The EPA estimates the xDrive28i’s fuel economy at 25/34/28 mpg city/highway/combined; the M35i xDrive is rated at 23/31/26 mpg.

Trim Levels and Safety Features
On the surface, it may not look like BMW offers the 2024 X1 in a typically wide array of trim levels, but there are differences in standard equipment between the xDrive28i and M35i xDrive.
The xDrive28i rides on 18-inch wheels and features satin-aluminum exterior trim, a power liftgate, keyless entry and start, synthetic leather upholstery, ambient lighting and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster that’s combined with a 10.7-inch central touchscreen in a seamless, curved display; it comes with BMW’s iDrive and Operating System 9 (which no longer uses a knob), navigation and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Standard safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind spot assist, lane departure warning, and front and rear parking sensors.
In addition to the extra power, the M35i also receives an adaptive M sport suspension, upgraded brakes, 19-inch wheels, black exterior trim, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and wireless phone charging. Its standard safety suite gets upgraded with additional functionality to watch for oncoming traffic during left turns, as well as automatic parking.

The 2024 BMW X1 is on sale now. The xDrive28i starts at $41,495, and the M35i xDrive has a starting price of $50,895 (all prices include $995 destination charge).
