2024 BMW X2: The Coupe Gets More, Outside and In

BMW’s small X2 SUV is growing in size and power for the 2024 model year, with a new exterior design that better lives up to BMW’s even-numbered-SUV-models-are-“coupes” philosophy. BMW says it will launch the 2024 X2 in March, with two versions available: the xDrive28i and sportier M35i xDrive. The M35i xDrive is a new addition to the X2 lineup and was expected after BMW added the variant to the similarly sized X1 SUV.

Updated Exterior Design
The 2024 X2 now looks more like the X4 and X6, BMW’s larger “sports activity coupes.” Its new styling includes a larger and more upright grille design and a raked roofline that slopes down into the decklid. Other styling elements include flared wheel arches above new wheel designs in 19-, 20- and 21-inch sizes.
The new X2 is 7.6 inches longer than its predecessor at 179.8 inches, making it 2.6 inches longer than the X1, and it gains almost an inch in wheelbase. It’s nearly an inch wider than the previous-generation model, with wider front and rear tracks for a more athletic appearance. Height increases 2.5 inches, as well.
Roomier, Techier Interior
The larger exterior dimensions translate into increased interior dimensions, with BMW claiming more backseat legroom, as well as increased shoulder and elbow room for all occupants. (Notably absent from the automaker’s claims are mentions of headroom, however.) The spaciousness also extends to what BMW says is a significantly larger cargo area, with a manufacturer-claimed 25.3 cubic feet of room with the backseat up and 51.7 cubic feet with the backseat folded down.
The X2 also boasts a new seat design for both the standard seats and optional sport seats, which BMW says is more comfortable for long drives and offers more lateral support for spirited driving. Upholstery choices are Veganza vegan faux leather or Veganza and simulated suede as part of the M Sport Package.
Interior tech includes the BMW Curved Display, here consisting of a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel and 10.7-inch touchscreen display. The operating system is BMW’s iDrive 9, which includes over-the-air update capability. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, and the displays are also configurable.
The optional BMW Digital Premium service offers further customization options and includes built-in streaming services and gaming on the 10.7-inch display using a smartphone as a controller. A camera mounted in the ceiling allows occupants to take photos and videos, and owners can also check in on the interior remotely via the My BMW smartphone app.
More Power
Both the xDrive28i and M35i xDrive are powered by turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines. In the xDrive28i, the four-banger makes 241 horsepower, up from 228, and torque is up from 258 to 295 pounds-feet. The sportier M35i xDrive makes the same torque as the xDrive28i but ups output to 312 hp. All 2024 X2s come standard with all-wheel drive and use a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The new X2 will be significantly more agile than its predecessor, according to BMW, due in part to a lighter but more rigid body, the aforementioned longer wheelbase and wider tracks.

Pricing and Release Date
BMW says the 2024 X2 will go on sale in March of 2024, with pricing expected closer to that time. The new X2 will make its public debut at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show (nee Tokyo Motor Show) in late October.
