2024 Ford F-150 Raptor R: More, More, More (Power)

So, your new 700-horsepower Ford F-150 Raptor R just isn’t enough firepower, huh? We get it — constant jeering from the Ram 1500 TRX crowd with their 2 extra ponies would wear us down, too. It sounds like you might need to talk to your local Ford dealer, for while Ram’s supercharged supertruck has already reached its production terminus, it seems Ford isn’t done fiddling with its Raptor R.

For 2024, the Raptor R’s supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 engine gains an extra 20 hp, now pulling stumps and smashing through desert whoops with a healthy 720 hp. Torque remains unchanged at 640 pounds-feet, but Ford mentions the powertrain tweaks do result in a wider torque curve. The automaker says the secret behind this extra gumption is “reduced air inlet losses” and “optimized calibration,” jargon that’s sure to infuriate TRX-less Ram drivers.

For now, the Raptor R remains in a class of its own without the TRX, though spy shots have hinted that another generation of Ram’s off-road menace is forthcoming, albeit with a version of Stellantis’ new twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. In the Jeep Grand Wagoneer, the long sixer is good for a meaty 510 hp; not thick enough for baiting the Raptor R, but more than enough to make Chevrolet fans cry into their coffee. As of 2024, GM still hasn’t offered a true Raptor competitor, with the 420-hp Silverado ZR2 being the Bow-Tie brand’s closest analog.
Everything else on the F-150 Raptor mostly stays the same, including the non-R trim that carries on with the 450-hp twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6. Too much truck — or cash? Don’t forget the Raptor comes in a size down, too: The neat, compact Ranger Raptor is now sold on our shores.
