2025 Rivian R1S and R1T Look Unchanged, Thoroughly Redesigned Under the Skin

With the smaller R2 and R3 on the way, Rivian is not neglecting its first (and flagship) models. For the 2025 model year, the R1S SUV and its pickup truck twin, the R1T, don’t appear significantly different from the outside, but they are comprehensively reworked under the sheet metal. Rivian has changed more than half of the electric vehicles’ hardware components, from the batteries and motors to the suspension, and fully redesigned their software.

Batteries, Range and Efficiency

New battery packs are said to simplify manufacturing and service. While the Standard and Large battery packs lose a few miles of range, the Max pack gains an additional 10 to 20 miles. Rivian says the new Standard battery pack is good for up to 270 miles of range, the Large up to 330 miles and the Max pack up to 420 miles. On a suitable DC fast charger, the batteries are said to be able to charge from 10% to 80% in as little as 30 minutes, adding 140 miles of range in just 20 minutes.

A revised climate control system now relies on a heat pump, a more efficient means of managing interior temperature that comes with the added benefit of being easier to service.

Performance

Rivian also redesigned the electric motors in the 2025 R1 series. The motors are now oil-cooled for improved heat management in low-speed driving and greater efficiency in high-speed cruising. The basic Dual-Motor setup grants the R1S and R1T a total of 533 horsepower and 610 pounds-feet of torque; these slowest Rivians still sprint from 0-60 mph in a claimed 4.5 seconds. The Performance Dual-Motor setup amps system output up to 665 hp and 829 pounds-feet, dropping the 0-60 time to 3.4 seconds.

New for 2025 is a Tri-Motor setup that powers the rear axle with two motors and the front with one; they combine for a total of 850 hp and 1,103 pounds-feet, catapulting the R1 to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds while still enabling an estimated range of 380 miles. Both the Tri- and Quad-Motor R1s can disable their rear motors under light loads to improve efficiency. Whereas the first-generation Quad-Motor managed an already impressive 835 hp, the 2025 model produces an outrageous 1,025 hp and 1,198 pounds-feet. Rivian says it will hit 60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds on its way to 10.5-second quarter-mile.

Managing the Momentum

Rivian also fully reengineered the R1’s suspension, fitting recalibrated air springs front and rear, as well as new dampers. A new hydraulic roll-control system should help quiet some of the complaints about the first-gen R1S’s handling.

New wheel designs and tire choices will allow buyers to personalize the look and ride of their R1. And, of course, there are new paint and interior finish options, as well as available exterior-trim blackout and an electrochromic panoramic moonroof that varies its opacity at the touch of a button. Addressing a frequent complaint from current owners, the wireless charging pad has been “much improved.”

All-New Tech, Too

A new Rivian Autonomy Platform relies on 11 cameras and five radar sensors. Utilizing predictive artificial intelligence, it has 10 times the computing power of the first-generation system and eight times the number of camera megapixels. This improves visibility, including in poor light and inclement weather, allowing the vehicle to “see” three times farther, up to 10 seconds ahead.

Eventually, the 2025 Rivians’ headlights will allow drivers to see farther even with oncoming traffic. The redesigned headlights are capable of selectively dimming only certain areas of the light pattern to maintain high-beam visibility without blinding other drivers. Rivian says this feature, called Adaptive Drive Beam, will be enabled via over-the-air update later this year.

Highway Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centering steering for hands-on semi-autonomous driving on certain highways, is standard on the 2025 R1S and R1T. Enhanced Highway Assist and automated lane changes will be available later this year through an OTA update, as will expanded road coverage for both the standard and Enhanced systems.
