Ford’s latest recall of its Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs (Lincoln is Ford’s luxury arm) involves an issue with the trailer taillights, which may not illuminate. More than 213,100 vehicles are involved.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2025 Explorers and Aviators. These vehicles may have an improperly manufactured body control module that could prevent the taillights on a trailer from illuminating while towing, reducing visibility for other drivers and increasing the risk of a crash.

To resolve the issue, dealers will replace the affected body control module on vehicles with less than 9,000 miles; for vehicles with more than 9,000 miles, they’ll perform a functional check on the body control module and replace it if necessary. Both repairs and the functional check will be done for free.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Oct. 13, and a second letter will be sent when the remedy is available. In the meantime, owners with further questions may contact Ford at 866-436-7332 (Ford’s number for this recall is 25C42), the National Traffic Safety Administration vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit the NHTSA website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
