An issue with the brakes has prompted the latest recall out of Mercedes-Benz for nearly 292,300 SUVs and minivans.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2006-12 GL-Class and M-Class SUVs and R-Class minivans (for which I had to be reminded that, yes, there actually was an AMG performance variant), specifically:

  • 2007-09 GL320, 2010-12 GL350, 2007-12 GL450, 2008-12 GL550
  • 2007-09 ML320, 2006-11 ML350, 2010-11 ML450, 2006-07 ML500, 2008-11 ML550, 2007-11 AMG ML63
  • 2007-09 R320, 2006-12 R350, 2006-07 R500, 2008 R550, 2007 AMG R63

Moisture may accumulate and cause corrosion in the brake booster housing unit, which can result in reduced brake performance or brake failure, increasing the risk of a crash.

Given the serious nature of the problem, Mercedes advises owners not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is completed. Dealers will remove the rubber sleeve, inspect the brake booster and, as necessary, replace it for free. Mercedes will begin notifying owners May 27, but those with further questions can call the automaker at 800-367-6372, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
