Kia’s compact and mid-size SUVs have been undergoing model-year changes of late, and now the South Korean manufacturer is tacking on another addition: a recall. Nearly 71,000 Sorento and Sportage SUVs are affected.

Model-year 2016-22 Sorentos, model-year 2021-23 Sorento Hybrids, model-year 2022-23 Sorento PHEVs and model-year 2017-22 Sportages are affected by the latest recall, which involves SUVs equipped with a tow hitch harness originally or purchased through a Kia dealership. Debris and moisture accumulation on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire, increasing the risk of injury.

The remedy is currently under development, but for the time being, owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the repair has been completed. Kia will begin notifying owners Nov. 14, but those with further questions can call the automaker at 800-333-4542 (Kia’s number for this recall is SC249) or visit NHTSA’s website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
