Affected vehicles include the following models and model years:
- 2012-15 X1 SUVs
- 2012-16 328i sedans and wagons, 328xi and 528i sedans and Z4 coupes
- 2013-17 X3 SUVs
- 2014-16 228i, 228xi and 428i coupes
- 2015-16 428xi coupes

The issue is with the water pump’s electrical plug connector, which may accumulate liquid and cause a short circuit. This increases the risk of a fire.
To resolve the issue, dealers will replace the water pump and plug connector and install a protective shield, as necessary, for free. BMW will notify owners Oct. 4, but those with further questions can contact the automaker at 800-525-7417, NHTSA’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
