BMW is recalling more than 36,900 examples of its X3 SUV over an issue that could cause the steering wheel to move unintentionally.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2025-26 X3s. The steering system software in these vehicles may not be robust enough to detect if the steering torque sensor is malfunctioning and may allow the steering wheel to move without driver input when the vehicle is stationary. This increases the risk of an injury and crash.

As a fix, the steering system software will be updated via an over-the-air update or by a dealer for free. BMW will notify owners Feb. 2, 2026, but those with further questions can contact the automaker at 800-525-7417, NHTSA’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
