Burger King Tests Energy Speed Bumps

As vehicles slowed to go into the drive-through, they depressed plates that turned gears, which produced about 2,000 watts per car. The experiment’s purpose was to test the system’s durability, so the King didn’t actually use any of that electricity (although passing cars were treated to a light show to prove the system wasn’t bogus).

The company will perform similar tests in other American cities, including at a Four Seasons hotel in Washington, D.C., and a Holiday Inn Express in Baltimore. They eventually hope to market these kinetic energy collection systems to businesses that experience slow-moving traffic and could collect a portion of their energy from movement that happens every day.
