Cadillac unveiled its coming 2020 CT4 entry-level sedan in May in Detroit — but only in its top-of-the-line CT4-V performance dress. Today, GM’s luxury brand took to social media to offer some details on the tamer trim levels of the entry sedan that replaces the departed ATS. Cadillac says ordering will open for the car at the end of 2019 at prices still to be announced.

The brand seems to be mimicking the Europeans, who like to show you the performance AMG or M versions of a new car before coming along later to detail the less expensive civilian versions that more people will buy. You can get full details of the CT4-V via the related link above.

In addition to the performance CT4-V, Cadillac said the CT4 will offer Luxury, Premium Luxury and Sport trim levels. It also announced that its Super Cruise hands-free driving system, which is being expanded to more roads, will become available on the CT4 at some point next year.

Multiple Engine Choices

The base engine will be a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder putting out 237 horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of torque and mated to an eight-speed automatic. That’s down from 272 hp for the base 2.0-liter in the outgoing ATS. Rear-wheel-drive is standard; all-wheel drive is offered on all models.

The new engine upgrade — the 3.6-liter V-6 available on the 2019 model is dropped — is the turbocharged 2.7-liter four that’s standard on the V model. It will be an option for the Premium Luxury trim level, but in a detuned version putting out 309 hp and 348 pounds-feet of torque versus 325 and 380 in the V. As with the V, however, it will be mated to a 10-speed automatic.

All models offer selectable drive modes that, depending on equipment, can alter settings for shifting, suspension, steering and brake feel, AWD front and rear torque split and exhaust note. The modes include Tour, Sport, Snow/Ice, Track and a personal mode; the V gets an additional performance V Mode. Tire options will include Continental self-sealing tires and run-flat tires.

Softer Look But Still ATS in the Middle

Cadillac says the CT4 is a bit bigger than the ATS, and the overall softer lines — particularly in the non-V models — and fastback profile echo Cadillac’s big CT6 sedan a little more than the new 2020 CT5, to my eye. But I also see a lot of the ATS in the middle as well as the roofline and windows. The grille and exterior trim in bright finish distinguish the Luxury and Premium Luxury trim levels, while the Sport trim level offers the darkened trim and grille as well as some of the more aggressive bumper and trim design aspects of the V model (as well as its Brembo front brakes) in a lower-performance version.

The interior features an 8-inch touchscreen powered by GM’s latest operating system. Standard features include keyless entry and push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel (heated optional), color dual-display driver information center, LED interior lighting and premium audio with active noise cancellation.

While pricing is still to come, we know that the next-level-up 2020 CT5 is due on sale in the fall, including prices with a destination charge.
