Chime Out: 817,000 Teslas Recalled for Faulty Seat Belt Warning
In yet another sizable safety notice affecting its entire model lineup, Tesla is issuing a recall for more than 817,000 vehicles over a federally required audible chime notifying drivers when their seat belts aren’t fastened.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2017-22 Model 3 sedans; model-year 2020-22 Model Y SUVs; and model-year 2021-22 Model S sedans and Model X SUVs. The aforementioned chime may not go off when the vehicle starts and the driver hasn’t buckled their seat belt. The driver could consequently be unaware their seat belt isn’t fastened, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
As with the recall announced Tuesday for the “rolling stop” malfunction, Tesla will perform an over-the-air software update for free to amend this problem. The automaker will begin notifying owners April 1, but in the meantime, those with questions can call Tesla at 877-798-3752, or visit NHTSA’s website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
