Current 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Reservation Holders to Get 2022 Model Instead, Says VW
The global microchip shortage has thrown a wrench into most automakers’ production plans, forcing shoppers to navigate sparse inventory on dealer lots and longer wait times for new-vehicle orders. Volkswagen is no exception; the brand’s all-electric ID.4 SUV has been hit by the shortage, causing delays in delivery dates. Even though we’ve spotted more ID.4s on the road in recent weeks, some reservation holders are still waiting for their vehicles to arrive. Now, VW has provided an update with both good and bad news for those shoppers.

First, the good news: A VW spokesperson confirmed in an email to Cars.com that reservation holders who paid a $500 deposit on the 2021 ID.4 but have yet to take delivery will receive a 2022 model at the same base MSRP as the 2021. The 2022 model comes with some other improvements, as well, including improved range and other enhancements to be disclosed at a later date, VW said.
Now for the bad news: Some reservation holders will be left in a holding pattern for several more months, as 2022 deliveries aren’t expected until the end of February or the beginning of March, VW confirmed. Also, shoppers who did not lock in an order with a deposit during the reservation process will be required to pay the adjusted price for the new model year.
2021 ID.4 Pricing and Range
The 2021 ID.4 base Pro model starts at $41,190 (all prices include destination fees) for rear-wheel drive and $44,870 for all-wheel drive. The Pro S, which adds features like a panoramic roof and larger touchscreen, starts at $45,690 for RWD and $49,370 for AWD. These prices do not include a potential federal tax credit of $7,500 or any available state credits.
The EPA-estimated range for the 2021 ID.4 Pro is 260 miles with RWD and 249 miles with AWD, while the Pro S gets an estimated 250 miles with RWD or 240 miles with AWD. Enhancements to the vehicle’s range and other updates will be announced later, and pricing for the 2022 model will be revealed in “a couple of weeks,” according to VW. Any shoppers who reserve an ID.4 moving forward will receive a 2022 model, according to a message on the automaker’s website.
