Ford’s Ranger pickup truck continues to make headlines as part of the latest wave of news concerning the ongoing Takata airbag inflator crisis. Following a Takata-related death in November 2022, the automaker issued recall in March addressing a population of nearly 99,000 Rangers that were improperly repaired in two previous recalls. Ford has now added more vehicles to that population, bringing the number up to nearly 232,000.
Affected vehicles include certain model-year 2004-06 Rangers that received replacement front passenger-side airbag inflators in three previous recalls. The airbag inflator may have been installed in an incorrect orientation, which could prevent the airbag from deploying in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
To resolve the issue, dealers will inspect and reinstall the front passenger-side airbag inflator, as necessary, for free. Ford will begin notifying owners May 22, but those with further questions can contact the automaker at 866-436-7332 (Ford’s number for this recall is 23S08), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
