Taking a page from the iPhone, Ford will upgrade the latest version of its popular Sync system with what it’s calling “mobile apps.” The idea is to make the Sync system compatible with almost any application on a driver’s cell phone or MP3 player, according to the Detroit News.
The system will be able to stream music from Internet radio sites such as Pandora, read incoming Twitter messages aloud and alert drivers to location-specific applications that have information about nearby businesses and attractions. The text-to-speech system will keep drivers’ eyes on the road, and they will be able to manage the entire system simply through voice commands.
Ford will unveil the system at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. Current Sync users will be able to download the upgrade when it becomes available, but it’s a safe bet that this upgrade will come with a price tag attached.
