Having already collaborated on more than 1,000 public DC fast-charging stalls and expecting to open their 2,000th by the end of 2024, GM and charging network operator EVgo have unveiled plans for a series of flagship charging stations in major metropolitan areas across the U.S.

The flagship stations will include 350-kilowatt chargers able to provide the fastest charge to electric vehicles, sheltered under well-lit canopies with pull-through chargers and security cameras. The plan will locate these destinations near amenities to occupy EV drivers while their cars juice up, including coffee shops, dining and shopping destinations.

Big (Charging) Banks

GM and EVgo say most of their flagship destinations will feature up to 20 individual charging stalls, with certain locations boasting “significantly higher stall counts.” The companies have not said which metropolitan areas will host the stations, but that they will be “deployed coast to coast” in states including Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New York and Texas. Eventually, the plan is for flagship destinations to include more than 400 individual charging plugs.

“The future of EV charging is larger stall count locations, high-power charging and designing around features that customers love,” said EVgo president Dennis Kish. “In order to be the charging provider of choice … we will continue to innovate to deliver a charging experience that is convenient, comfortable and dependable for current and future EV drivers.”

The announcement of the flagship destinations, which will be co-branded by EVgo and GM Energy, is part of an ongoing effort between the two companies that will eventually see 2,850 DC fast-charging stalls installed in the U.S. The companies expect to open their first flagship location in 2025.
