Honda is recalling certain accessory wheels that were available for its Civic sedans and hatchbacks over an issue that may cause the wheels to detach. Approximately 406,000 vehicles may be affected, though the company said only 3,276 wheels are faulty.
Certain 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels that were sold as accessories for model-year 2016-21 Civics may not have been manufactured properly. The steel lug seat inserts in the wheels may not have been pressed into the nut seating surface; as a result, the wheels may detach from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a loss of control and a crash.
Dealers will inspect the wheels and replace the hubs and wheels, as necessary, for free. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Dec. 8, but those with further questions in the meantime can contact the automaker at 888-234-2138 (Honda’s designation for this recall is MMZ), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
