How Does the 2025 Tesla Cybertruck Score in Crash Tests?

Key points:
- Tesla’s 2025 Cybertruck was recently tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, but as its scores ranged from good to poor in the various evaluations, it missed out on earning either of the agency’s awards.
 - However, the 2025 Cybertruck has a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently crash-tested seven electric vehicles, and the Tesla Cybertruck pickup truck was among them. Overall, the Cybertruck’s scores run the gamut from good to poor, depending on the test.

IIHS Crash-Test Results
In IIHS testing, the 2025 Cybertruck earned good ratings in the moderate overlap front crash test, though that comes with a caveat: The agency said the good moderate overlap rating only applies to models built after April 2025, when changes were made to the Cybertruck’s front underbody structure.
The truck also earned a good score in pedestrian crash prevention; the agency did not test the Cybertruck in vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention. In the seat belt reminder category, the Cybertruck earned a marginal rating. In Latch accessibility for car seats, the truck earned an acceptable rating. During our Car Seat Check, we appreciated the truck’s accessible lower anchors but found its top tether anchors somewhat complicated to use.
The Cybertruck’s lone poor rating comes from its headlights. The truck was not tested in small front overlap or side crash tests, so it’s not yet eligible for either of the agency’s safety awards: Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+. To qualify as a Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the small overlap front and side impact tests, score good or acceptable in an evaluation of front crash prevention systems, and come standard with headlights that rate good or acceptable. To earn the Top Safety Pick+ designation, a good test score in the moderate overlap crash test is required.
How Did the 2025 Tesla Cybertruck Fare in NHTSA Crash Tests?
In tests done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Cybertruck fared well and earned a five-star rating, the agency’s highest. The truck’s overall rating consists of a five-star score in front crash tests, a five-star score in side crash tests and a four-star score in rollover testing.
