What’s Changed for 2027?

Returning after a one-year hiatus, the Oxford Edition establishes a new entry point for the Cooper lineup, dropping the base price of the two- and four-door models by $4,000. Elsewhere across the lineup, more upholstery and exterior trim choices are added to the Cooper’s already-bewildering catalog of options.

Fuel Economy

All 2027 Coopers are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is the only available drivetrain layout. However, there are still a variety of choices. All three bodystyles are available in Cooper C and Cooper S tunes. The Cooper C’s four-cylinder makes 161 horsepower and 184 pounds-feet of torque. In the Cooper S, the turbo 2.0-liter generates 201 hp and 221 pounds-feet. Available in the two-door and convertible, the John Cooper Works tune boosts output to 228 hp and 280 pounds-feet. Fuel-economy ratings below are for the 2026 model year. However, as there are no major changes to the Cooper lineup this year, they are expected to carry over to 2027.

Trim Powertrain City MPG Highway MPG Combined MPG
Cooper C 2 Door/4 Door Turbo 1.5-liter  three-cylinder, seven-speed automatic 27-28 39 32
Cooper S 2 Door/4 Door Turbo 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder, seven-speed automatic 28 39 32

There is more than just the distinction between C, S and JCW to complicate the Cooper lineup. Each is also available in three trim levels — Signature, Signature Plus and Iconic — and within each trim level buyers have a choice of what Mini calls styles. The Classic style is the only option offered with the Signature trim. Signature Plus buyers can choose between Classic and Favoured styles. Within the Cooper S lineup, those who opt for the Iconic trim can also select the JCW style. The exception is the Cooper JCW — not the JCW style, but the tune. There, every trim level comes in the JCW style.

Given all that variety, it is perhaps surprising just how much is standard on every Cooper. The entry-level Signature trim in the Classic style features 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with automatic high beams, a panoramic moonroof, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and front and rear parking sensors. Inside every Cooper are a mix of synthetic leather and cloth upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control and ambient lighting. Cabin tech includes a head-up display and a 9.4-inch circular touchscreen with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The C and S are identically equipped, but the JCW also includes a body kit consisting of unique front and rear bumpers, rocker panels and grille, different wheels, upgraded brakes, power-adjustable front seats and paddle shifters.

Although it is cheaper than the Signature trim, the Oxford Edition also includes 18-inch wheels and Active Driving Assistant with blind spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking. It is, however, only available in three exterior colors — white, yellow and blue — with a black roof and black interior.

The Signature Plus trim adds more paint choices, the option of 18-inch wheels at no extra cost, keyless entry, remote start, wireless phone charging and Active Driving Assistant. Upgrade to the Iconic trim, and you’ll add augmented-reality navigation, a Harman Kardon sound system, a 360-degree camera system and automatic front braking. Forward automatic emergency braking is standard on just about every other car on the market, so it’s notable that it’s not standard here.

Aptly named, the styles available within each trim level largely consist of appearance items. The Favoured style includes sport seats and different interior material and color choices. JCW style consists of the body kit, wheels, brakes and paddle shifters from the JCW model.

Versus the Competition

The base Cooper packs a lot of personality into a budget-priced package that compares well against similarly priced FWD cars, with a choice between two-door style and four-door practicality.
