How Much Is the 2027 Subaru Outback?
What Car Shoppers Need to Know
- A new entry-level trim drops the 2027 Subaru Outback‘s base price to $34,540 (including destination).
- The Outback is a popular wagonlike SUV with an available turbocharged engine.
- The off-road-oriented Wilderness trim gets a raised suspension and all-terrain tires.
Station wagons are a tough sell in the U.S. Just ask Toyota. The brand doesn’t quote individual sales figures for the Crown and its long-roof Crown Signia sibling, instead lumping them together as a combined Crown number. A handful of Toyotas have averaged more sales every month so far in 2026 than the Crowns have through the first three quarters of the year. Subaru station wagons, on the other hand, well, people snatch those right up. Americans buy about 16 Subaru Outbacks for every Crown sold. Subaru completely redesigned its station wagon last year with a design closer to that of an SUV, and the 2027 Outback grows even more appealing.

What’s Changed for 2027?
For 2027, a new entry-level trim drops the Outback’s base price by nearly $2,000. At the other end of the lineup, Subaru’s self-explanatory Highway Hands-Free Assist semi-autonomous driving tech is standard on the XT trim levels and optional on the Wilderness.
Fuel Economy
Subaru offers a choice of flat-four engines in the Outback. Most trim levels are powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter that makes 180 horsepower and 178 pounds-feet of torque. The XT trims and the Wilderness get a turbocharged 2.4-liter with 260 hp and 277 pounds-feet. Both are mated e;clusively to a continuously variable automatic transmission with paddles that allow the driver to manually shift through eight simulated gears if they so choose. Subaru’s signature all-wheel drive is standard across the lineup.
While base prices are down on every trim level, the turbocharged engine is a pricier upgrade this year. The Limited XT costs $3,600 more than the Limited, while the Touring XT is $3,100 more expensive than the Touring. Both XT trims for 2026 were around $2,600 more than their naturally aspirated counterparts.
| Trim | Powertrain | City | Highway | Combined |
| Base, Premium Limited, Touring | 180-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder; AWD | 25 | 31 | 27 |
| Limited XT, Touring XT | 260-hp, turbo 2.4-liter four-cylinder; AWD | 21 | 29 | 24 |
| Wilderness | 260-hp, turbo 2.4-liter four-cylinder; AWD | 21 | 27 | 23 |
Interior Features
The new entry-level Outback achieves its lower base price by forgoing basic luxury features like synthetic leather upholstery and power-adjustable seats. Its seats (manually adjustable in front) are upholstered in cloth, but they are still heated. The new base trim also includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a six-speaker audio system. Exterior features include 18-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights.
The base trim level also retains all of the same safety tech that was standard on the 2026 Outback. Subaru’s EyeSight safety suite includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-centering and emergency steering assist, blind spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors and automatic high beams.
No longer the cheapest Outback, the Premium features synthetic leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, USB-A and USB-C outlets for the front and rear seats, and climate control vents for the rear-seat occupants. It also grants buyers access to more optional equipment.
The Limited rides on black 18-inch wheels and adds a moonroof and rain-sensing wipers. Inside, it boasts a power-adjustable front-passenger seat, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel. The Limited also gets more infotainment: navigation, wireless phone charging and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. In addition to its more powerful engine, the Limited XT also gains a 360-degree camera system. The turbocharged Outbacks can be distinguished by their hood scoops.
The range-topping Touring trim gets the surround-view camera system with both engines. It also features upgraded leather upholstery, additional driver’s seat adjustability and ventilated front seats, plus Highway Hands-Free Assist, front cross-traffic alert and front and side parking sensors.
Built for buyers who might take their Outback a little farther from pavement, the Wilderness sits 0.8 inch higher than the rest of the lineup, with 9.5 inches of ground clearance. It rides on matte-black 17-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires and features copper-colored exterior trim and a matte-black hood decal. It forfeits some of the luxuries that are standard on the Touring, including the premium leather, ventilated seats, moonroof and safety tech, but all of it can be added back in with optional packages.
Versus the Competition
Other than the Toyota Crown Signia, the Subaru Outback doesn’t have any direct competitors. The Subaru is significantly cheaper than the Toyota, but the entry-level Crown Signia XLE lands somewhere between the Outback Limited and Touring in terms of standard luxury equipment. The Crown Signia’s standard hybrid powertrain is also vastly more efficient than the Outback’s 2.5-liter flat-four.
| Model | Powertrain Type | Price (With Destination Fee) | City/Highway/Combined MPG | Drivetrain |
| 2027 Subaru Outback Base | Gas | $34,540 | 25/31/27 | AWD |
| 2027 Toyota Crown Signia XLE | Hybrid | $46,485 | 39/37/38 | AWD |
