What Car Shoppers Need to Know

  • The Toyota Corolla Hatchback gets a standard digital instrument cluster and a larger optional touchscreen for 2027.
  • Its fuel efficiency is as high as an EPA-rated 35 mpg combined.
  • Pricing for the 2027 Toyota Corolla Hatchback starts at $26,075 (all prices include a $1,295 destination charge).

In the Toyota Corolla family, the sedan is the sensible sibling, and the hatchback is the wild child. The former is available with a hybrid engine that returns up to a manufacturer-rated 50 mpg combined, while the hatchback GR Corolla’s turbocharged three-cylinder engine cranks out 300 horsepower and flings the five-door from 0-60 mph in a claimed 4.9 seconds. Even without the turbocharged triple, Toyota only builds the Corolla Hatchback with the multi-link rear suspension that is optional on the sedan. Beyond the longer list of standard equipment that usually distinguishes trim levels, that more sophisticated setup improves ride comfort and handling. It also contributes to the hatchback’s loftier base price. Some $2,000 more expensive than the sedan — Toyota hasn’t released the four-door’s 2027 pricing yet — the Corolla Hatchback is still one of the most affordable new cars you can buy.

What’s Changed for 2027?

Last year’s late-’80s throwback FX Edition is gone, but its most prominent feature lives on: White 18-inch aluminum wheels are available for all Corolla Hatchbacks from Toyota’s accessories catalog. The entry-level SE trim gains a standard 7-inch digital instrument cluster for 2027; a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.5-inch touchscreen are optional on the SE and standard on the uplevel XSE.

Fuel Economy

The 2027 Corolla Hatchback SE and XSE are both powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 169 horsepower and 151 pounds-feet of torque. A continuously variable automatic transmission sends power exclusively to the front wheels. The fuel-economy figures below are manufacturer estimates; the 2027 Corolla Hatchback has not yet been rated by the EPA.

Trim City MPG Highway MPG Combined MPG
SE 32 41 35
XSE 30 38 33

Standard or Optional Features

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on every 2027 Corolla Hatchback. It includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-tracing steering assist, blind spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, road-sign recognition and automatic high beams. The entry-level SE rides on 16-inch aluminum wheels. It features LED headlights, keyless entry and start, cloth seats and single-zone automatic climate control. Cabin tech consists of an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging and a six-speaker audio system. The XSE can be distinguished by its 18-inch wheels, LED foglights and chrome rear-bumper trim. Inside, it gains synthetic leather upholstery, a heated and power-adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.5-inch touchscreen.

Versus the Competition

Even more than its sporty persona, Toyota’s emphasis for the Corolla Hatchback is affordability. It is cheaper than all of its chief competitors, and it returns better fuel economy, too. The Honda Civic Hatchback can be had with a hybrid powertrain that is good for 48 mpg combined, but it starts at nearly $32,000.

Model Price (With Destination Fee) Fuel Economy Drivetrain
2027 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE $26,075 32/41/35 mpg city/highway/combined FWD
