Hyundai Tucson to Bow in the East Before Heading West for 2022
Hyundai has been busy rounding out its SUV lineup with all-new models like the three-row Palisade and tiny Venue — but the automaker hasn’t forgotten to update some of its more familiar ones. Hyundai today released details of the next generation of its Tucson compact SUV, but it’s not yet clear how much of the global version will make it to the U.S. for 2022.

Exterior
Outside, the new Tucson wears a sharper, more angular face and a creased body. Hyundai calls the model’s new design theme “Sensuous Sportiness” (insert your own joke here). Other hallmarks of the new look include half-mirror-type daytime running lamps that are hidden in the grille and revealed when illuminated, along with a full-width taillamp that houses half-hidden triangular shapes that are also only visible when lit. One design oddity: Hyundai moved the car’s rear badge up into the glass and hid the rear wiper under the spoiler.
For the global market, the automaker announced the 2022 Tucson will be available in regular and long-wheelbase versions. No word yet on if we’re getting both configurations. Hyundai said the new model is bigger and has 38.7 cubic feet of cargo space, a decent amount more than the current version’s 31.0 cubic feet behind the rear seats.
Interior
Inside, the cabin takes on a sleek, minimalist look thanks to a focus on screens, including a large new central touchscreen and digital gauge cluster. The gear shifter also gets a makeover and is now a push-button gear selector.
The new Tucson will offer an 8-inch color touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that allows for two phones to be connected simultaneously, and the top trim will use a vertically stacked, dual 10.25-inch touchscreen setup (the previous Tucson had a standard 7-inch touchscreen).
The 2022 Tucson will get a new feature called Car-to-Home, which allows customers to control smart home appliances from the car, such as turning on the home air conditioner before arrival. Hyundai also said the SUV’s voice recognition system has been updated to understand more commands.

Powertrain Options
A range of powertrains will be available, though Hyundai has not yet said which ones will make it to the States. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission joins a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder; the turbo will also be available as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid.
The current Tucson uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder or 2.4-liter four-cylinder; the model’s previous turbo 1.6-liter was dropped for 2019.
Release Date
The 2022 Tucson will go on sale in South Korea later this month as a 2021 model and then hit the U.S. and other markets during the first half of 2021. Hyundai also said a sport-oriented N Line version will follow.
