Kia’s Sportage compact SUV arrived for 2023 with a new platform, engine option and electrified variants. Unfortunately, it’s also accompanied by a recall involving its side curtain airbags, affecting nearly 77,000 vehicles.
Affected models include model-year 2023 Sportage SUVs manufactured at the brand’s Kia Georgia plant. The issue stems from the side curtain airbags being twisted during installation, preventing them from being able to deploy properly in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
To fix the issue, dealers will inspect and reinstall the side curtain airbags, as needed, for free. Kia will begin notifying owners Dec. 28, but those with further questions can call the brand at 800-333-4542 (Kia’s number for this recall is SC257), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
