CARS.COM — The odometer on Cars.com’s 2016 Volvo XC90 T6 has skyrocketed more than 8,000 miles since our last update in June. The SUV’s average fuel economy unfortunately hasn’t climbed at a proportional rate, but we’ve been hoping for a fuel-economy spike after observing disappointing mileage from our supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder.
A summer of long highway driving helped our XC90’s average fuel economy climb from 20 mpg to 20.7 mpg, which is still short of the T6 model’s 22-mpg combined rating. Fuel prices remain reasonable, however, and the $2,822.17 we’ve spent so far on gas doesn’t seem overly offensive considering the average $2.90 a gallon we’ve paid for premium fuel. Hitting the 22-mpg mark would have meant a theoretical savings of $166, so we’re not too far in the hole and there’s still more time left in our long-term test for the XC90 to hit the 22-mpg mark.
