Back in June 2021, Nissan recalled nearly 139,000 of its Sentra sedans over an issue with the tie rod that could cause a loss of steering control. Now, the automaker is back to expand the recall to a total of more than 236,000 examples of the sedan for the same issue.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2020-22 Sentras. The left or right tie rod’s strength may be compromised, allowing it to bend or break if it experiences excess force, such as hitting a curb. A broken tie rod can cause a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash and injury.

Nissan is advising drivers to pull over and contact their dealer for transportation assistance if their steering wheel appears off-center or is vibrating. In the meantime, until new parts are produced and available, dealers will inspect and replace the bent or broken tie rods for free. Nissan will begin notifying owners Oct. 5, but those with further questions can call the automaker at 800-867-7669 (Nissan’s number for this recall is R23B3; vehicles previously repaired under recall 21V-461 will also need to have the updated remedy performed), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
