Nissan has issued a recall for more than 1,000 of its Ariya electric vehicles due to an issue with the steering wheel that could cause it to detach during driving.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2023 Ariyas. A steering wheel bolt that was either installed incorrectly or tightened improperly may allow the steering wheel to have some play or detach from the steering column, causing drivers to lose steering control and increasing the risk of a crash.

Nissan instructs owners to check their steering wheels by gently rocking them forward and back with their hands. If it feels loose, Nissan advises owners to contact their local dealer for transport and immediate repair.

To resolve the issue, dealers will replace the steering wheel bolt, as necessary, for free. Owners will be notified March 30, but those with further questions can contact the automaker at 1-800-867-7669 (Nissan’s number for this recall is PC956), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
