The recall mostly affects vehicles sold and driven in New England, the Midwest and the East Coast, where severe winter weather necessitates the use of road salt. The salt has a corrosive effect on the vehicle’s front subframe.
Over time, the internal corrosion could cause wheel misalignment, which could degrade steering ability or wear the tires quickly. In a worst-case scenario, the subframe could separate and lead to a crash.
Dealers will repair the vehicles for free. Owners may contact Kia at 800-333-4542 or the NHTSA vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236.
