The all-new 2016 Hyundai Tucson will starts at $23,595, including an $895 destination charge, when it goes on sale later this month. Hyundai’s compact SUV is thoroughly redesigned for 2016 with larger exterior proportions freeing up passenger and cargo room, two areas where the Tucson lagged behind the competitive segment featuring compacts like the Honda CR-V and Nissan Rogue.

Fuel economy at the end of the Tucson’s lifespan also wasn’t very competitive, and for 2016 the new Tucson gets a boost in mileage on base trim levels, plus an all-new Eco trim level featuring a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The fuel-friendly combo rivals the best in the segment with EPA ratings as high as 26/33/29 mpg city/highway/combined. Honda’s CR-V clocks in at 27/34/29 mpg with slightly better city and highway numbers, and the Mazda CX-5’s best mileage comes with a manual transmission and the 2.0-liter at 26/35/29 mpg.

The entry-level Tucson SE’s mileage ratings of 23/31/26 mpg with front-wheel drive come with the standard engine, a 164-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. You’ll have to upgrade to the Eco trim level at $25,045 to get the most efficient 1.6-liter and seven-speed transmission setup. Over at the Honda and Mazda camps, the CR-V’s base price of $24,325 gets you the highest-efficiency model, while the CX-5 is $22,675 with the efficient manual transmission and $24,075 with less-efficient automatic (26/33/29 mpg).

Adding all-wheel drive to the Tucson drops mileage 2-3 mpg in combined ratings and costs an additional $1,400 on the SE, Eco, Sport and Limited trim levels. SE standard equipment includes 17-inch wheels, backup camera, automatic projector headlights with LED accents, rear climate vents, satellite radio and iPod and USB inputs plus Bluetooth connectivity.
