Rivian Debuts California Dune Edition R1S, R1T

While Tesla is reportedly buffing the laser-etched Foundation Series markings off Cybertrucks to sell them at a lower cost as regular-production pickup trucks, rival electric-vehicle maker Rivian is rolling out a limited-edition variant. Meet the California Dune Edition, a paint and accessories package available both for the R1S SUV and R1T pickup.

Sandy Paint, Easy-Clean Interior
Creamy beige paint is the California Dune Edition’s defining characteristic and in fact carries the same name as the package itself. Buyers who want more California Dune can get the new 20-inch rally-style wheels sprayed to match; dark gray is also available.
While the wheel design is exclusive to the limited-edition EVs, the size is shared with other Rivians equipped with the optional Adventure Package. Included on the California Dune Edition, the pack downsizes from 22-inch wheels to 20s with taller sidewalls and adds reinforced underbody protection, a full-size spare tire and a utility panel featuring an onboard air compressor. The California Dune Edition also includes a pair of Maxtrax recovery boards — meant to be wedged under the tires for additional traction off-road — mounted to dark crossbars on the roof of the R1S or across the bed on the R1T. Rivian’s Darkout Package, which features dark exterior badging, contrasts with the light paint.

The color theme continues inside to the California Dune Edition’s new two-tone upholstery. Below the beltline, much of the interior is wrapped in Sandstone synthetic leather that matches the exterior, and a black upper cabin makes the light material pop. Rivian says new flooring material makes shaking out sand from desert excursions easy.
Powertrain Specs and Range
Based exclusively on the Tri-Motor R1S and R1T, the California Dune Edition is powered by two motors on the rear axle and one on the front. With a combined 850 horsepower and 1,103 pounds-feet of torque, they fling the Rivians from 0-60 mph in a claimed 2.9 seconds. With Rivian’s largest battery, the Max pack (which is standard in the Tri-Motor), the California Dune Edition has an EPA-estimated range of 329 miles.

How Much Is the Rivian R1 California Dune Edition?
If a bunch of existing options and accessories and a special paint color don’t sound like much, know that Rivian also isn’t charging much for the California Dune Edition. In fact, it’s charging nothing extra: Priced from $101,700 for the R1T and $107,700 for the R1S (prices include $1,800 destination), the limited-edition variant costs exactly the same as the base Tri-Motor vehicles, meaning that all of the add-ons are essentially free. That should keep Rivian from having to pretend its trucks aren’t limited editions. The 2025 Rivian R1S and R1T California Dune Editions are on sale now.
