Ford’s rough recent stretch of recalls continues with a new directive for nearly 3 million vehicles over a bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission.
Affected vehicles include model-year 2013-18 C-Max Energi and C-Max Hybrid SUVs, 2013-16 Fusion sedans, 2013-21 Transit Connect vans and 2015-18 Edge SUVs. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach, which could prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear and cause it to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects Park. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.
To fix the problem, dealers will replace the underhood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing for free. Ford will begin notifying owners June 27, but those with further questions in the meantime can call Ford at 866-436-7332 (Ford’s number for this recall is 22S43), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
