The annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas should be renamed the Cars and Electronics Show given how many automakers use it to debut new cars and concepts. This year, Ram showed off its first step toward electric pickup trucks with the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV Concept. We got to check out the concept at the 2023 Chicago Auto Show and hear all about its many, many, many features meant to make owners’ lives easier, and we saw it not a moment too soon: The production version of Ram’s first all-electric pickup truck will make its debut in a Super Bowl commercial. (Go Birds.)
We also learned the production truck will be named the Ram 1500 REV (Ram spokespeople pronounced it “rev” like revving an engine) and that the concept has been covered in “REV” badging the whole time. The whole time! Take that, SRT folks and your dozens of Hellcat and Challenger and Charger teasers! We’re just oblivious, there’s no need to drag things out.
Tricks and Features Galore
We also got to check out a lot of useful and cool and seemingly useful and maybe not-so-cool features on the concept, and Ram’s lips are firmly sealed regarding which ones might make it to production. The powered midgate pass-through, configurable seating, bidirectional power and much more seem fairly useful and likely; the built-in dashcam and projector are doable but maybe not necessary; and “Shadow Mode,” which allows the truck to follow behind the owner and move autonomously, seems like neither. We’ll have to wait and see.
Find out what I think of a bunch of these features (I know I left a bunch out) and watch me get into an argument with a truck in the video below.
