As the popularity of pickup trucks grows alongside the curiosity for electric vehicles, new battery-powered rigs are rolling in from familiar names like Ford and GM, as well as new players like Rivian. To compete with current and upcoming models like the Rivian R1T, Ford F-150 Lightning, GMC Hummer EV pickup and Chevrolet Silverado EV, Ram announced today an all-electric 1500 pickup truck will debut in the 2024 calendar year (likely as a 2025 model).

As the last of the Detroit Three to announce an all-electric pickup, Ram aims to lure future customers by keeping them actively involved in its development. To pique early interest, Ram teased two images of the 1500 EV concept, including the pickup’s chassis and its shadowy exterior with futuristic lighting.

Catching the Competition

What will set the all-electric Ram 1500 apart from the rivals that beat it to market? We’d argue a competitive range, stout towing capacity and relative affordability would make up for the lost time.

To wit, the Ram 1500 EV would need to match or exceed the estimated ranges and towing capacities of the Ford F-150 Lightning (300 miles and 10,000 pounds), the Rivian R1T (314 miles and 11,000 pounds), the GMC Hummer EV pickup (329 miles and 7,500 pounds) and the Chevrolet Silverado EV (400 miles and 8,000 pounds). Of note, the EPA has published ratings only for the R1T; other figures are automaker estimates.

Charging speeds, off-road capability and other technology can also give the Ram 1500 EV an edge. Currently, the R1T has a starting price of $68,575; the Hummer EV pickup starts at $79,995; and the F-150 Lightning and Silverado EV offer the lowest starting prices of the bunch at around $40,000 and $39,000, respectively. The Hummer EV pickup and F-150 Lightning will both offer hands-free lane centering, a feature Ram’s parent company, Stellantis, is starting to roll out with its Jeep division.

Electrified Future

Ram says the 1500 EV will be one of several battery-powered vehicles to arrive by 2025, and the brand predicts a full portfolio of electrified options across all segments by 2030. Stay tuned for more information on the upcoming all-electric Ram.
