Volkswagen’s ID.4 Replacement Includes a Critical Improvement
What Car Shoppers Need to Know
- The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan will replace the ID.4 electric SUV.
- The ID. Tiguan will go on sale in Europe in early 2027, with U.S. sales to follow later.
- Most specs are similar to those of the ID.4.
Volkswagen is looking for something of a do-over with its ID.4 compact electric SUV, which is set to be replaced sometime in 2027. The restart begins with the name, which is getting scrapped in favor of ID. Tiguan (with a space after the “ID.,” unlike the ID.4 but consistent with the ID. Buzz.”)

Familiar Powertrain Specs and Range
VW introduced the ID. Tiguan in a recent announcement but has now released more details on the upcoming EV. While the name and the look are new, much about the ID. Tiguan sounds familiar. In Europe, the standard battery will hold 58 kilowatt-hours of usable energy, the same as the now discontinued base pack for the ID.4 in the American market; optional overseas and possibly standard here will be a 77-kWh unit, which is standard in the 2026 ID.4.
It’s a similar story with the powertrain options. In Europe, the small battery powers a single rear-mounted motor with 188 horsepower, while the larger battery is available with a choice of a single motor making 282 hp or dual motors for all-wheel drive and 295 hp. In the U.S., the current ID.4 has 282 hp with rear-wheel drive and 335 hp with AWD.
Therefore, don’t expect the ID. Tiguan to have much more range than the 2026 ID.4 does. VW’s announcement sticks with metric measurements and European scales for range estimates, but the claimed maximum range of 600 kilometers is just 26 km (16 miles) more than the highest figure claimed for the German-market 2026 ID.4. Currently, the U.S.-market ID.4 has an EPA-estimated range of 291 miles with RWD and 263 miles with AWD, so there’s a chance that the ID. Tiguan breaks 300 miles, but we wouldn’t bet on it.
Hallelujah Inside
Inside the ID. Tiguan is the development we are most excited about: buttons, knobs, switches, and other physical controls return for the climate controls, audio system, steering-wheel controls and even the door handles. VW’s frustrating touch-sensitive controls have been one of our biggest complaints about many recent products, the ID.4 included.
That’s not to say the ID. Tiguan will be a fully analog experience. It sports a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15-inch central touchscreen and a 12-inch passenger display, although it’s unlikely all three are standard equipment. Buyers who want to honor VW’s past in their electric vehicle will be able to choose a retro gauge style that mimics the instruments in the fourth-generation Golf. This style will also give drivers a choice of six historically significant Volkswagens as the infotainment display background.
Like its internal-combustion namesake, the ID. Tiguan will offer a selection of upmarket features that are beyond the norm in the compact-SUV class. Available luxuries include a panoramic moonroof, massaging and ventilated front seats, and a Harman Kardon sound system.
Release Date and Pricing
The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan will launch in Europe in early 2027, with U.S. sales to follow. Pricing for our market will be announced closer to the start of sales, but we expect it to stick pretty close to current ID.4 levels.
