Saving money at the pump is likely a big priority for owners of subcompact cars, and fuel economy is one area we plan to cover exhaustively with Cars.com’s long-term Honda Fit EX test car. After just less than 4,000 miles, our 34.51 mpg real-world gas mileage is a hair away from the Fit’s EPA-rated 35 mpg combined.
Equipped with a fuel-saving continuously variable automatic transmission that helped raise fuel economy over the previous Fit as well as the current manual transmission Fit, our EX is EPA rated at 32/38/35 mpg city/highway/combined. That’s not the best the Fit can do: Thanks to aerodynamic underbody covering and less weight, the base LX is rated at 33/41/36 mpg.
We won’t be surprised to see higher numbers than the EPA ratings after observing more than a few tanks in the 38-plus mpg range so far, and as high as 40.1 mpg.
