What’s the Best New-Car Deal for the End of 2021?

Traditionally a big season for new-car discounts, the final weeks of 2021 are shaping up to be leaner than usual amid an ongoing new-vehicle supply shortage, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any deals. Looking for discounts the week between Christmas and New Year’s? We found ongoing — and attention-worthy — deals on a quartet of SUVs below that run through year’s end. You can also check out our December spotlight in the link below, published earlier this month, to find four other vehicles that have discounts till the new year.

Chevrolet’s mid-size SUV, the Blazer, still has a fair number of model-year 2021 examples in the current mix, with some 2 in 5 new Blazers on Cars.com dealer inventory still from the 2021 model year as of this writing. On that sizable subset, Chevrolet is offering $1,750 off in all the markets we checked for all versions but the base trim level, called L, which accounts for negligible inventory. Among the rest, Chevrolet’s discount amounts to 3%-5% off the SUV. In lieu of the cash, creditworthy shoppers can get 0% for 72 months, also on all trims but the L.

2022 Jeep Compass

- Factory discount: $750 to $2,750
- Approximate price after savings: $25,500 to $41,000
- Approximate factory savings: 3%-10%
- Offer ends: 3, 2022
It’s rare to see significant discounts on an incoming model year with fresh updates, but such is the case for the 2022 Jeep Compass. The compact SUV gets a spruced-up interior and new tech features for 2022, plus some cash on the hood to sweeten the pot. Discounts vary widely by region and trim level, but we found factory cash from $750 to $2,750 depending on specifics — enough to knock 3%-10% off the Compass’ price, depending on where and what you buy. In some markets, Jeep offers another $500 for those who finance at standard rates with parent company Stellantis (an amount excluded from the bullets above, as not all shoppers qualify). In lieu of the maximum cash offers, creditworthy shoppers can get discount financing; we observed everything from 0% for 36 months to 2.9% for 60 months, with bonus cash as high as $1,500 in some cases.

2021 Jeep Renegade

- Factory discount: $1,250 to $3,000
- Approximate price after savings: $25,500 to $35,500
- Approximate factory savings: 4%-9%
- Offer ends: 3, 2022
The Renegade, a frequent denizen of our monthly deals coverage, burns bright with discounts this holiday season. Depending on region and trim level, discounts range from $1,250 to $3,000 off the subcompact SUV’s 2021 model year, which still accounts for 94% of new Renegade inventory on Cars.com as of this writing. Such discounts amount to 4% to 9% off the SUV, with another $500 off in all regions we surveyed for shoppers who finance at standard rates through Stellantis. (Again, we exclude such financing bonuses from our calculations because not all shoppers qualify.) Alternately, creditworthy shoppers can nab discount financing; though a smattering of cases had no financing specials, most regions and trim levels we surveyed did: We observed everything from 0% for 48 months to 1.9% for 72 months, with $500 to $1,750 in bonus cash.

Editor’s Choice: 2021 Dodge Durango

- Factory discount: $1,450 to $3,250, excluding SRT Hellcat
- Approximate price after savings: $33,000 to $83,000, excluding SRT Hellcat
- Approximate factory savings: 3%-7%, excluding SRT Hellcat
- Offer ends: 3, 2022
The current-generation Dodge Durango has roots dating back to the 2011 model year, but tweaked exterior styling and a revamped interior breathe new life into the SUV. December discounts on the 2021 model are worth a gander: Now through year’s end, Dodge is offering $1,450 to $3,250 off nearly all examples of the SUV’s 2021 model year, which still accounts for nearly all current inventory as of this writing.
Those who finance with Dodge’s parent company, also Stellantis, can notch another $750 off for all but the highest-performance trims, the SRT and SRT Hellcat (again, an addition excluded from the numbers above because not all shoppers qualify). And speaking of the SRT Hellcat, the Durango’s 710-horsepower performance variant was the only one without discounts in the markets we checked; all others have advertised cash offers, which amount to 3%-7% off the SUV. In lieu of that, creditworthy shoppers can get varying finance specials, depending on region and trim; we observed 0% to 2.9% offers for terms ranging from 48 to 72 months, depending on specifics, with bonus cash as high as $2,500 in some cases.

How We Look for Deals
To help car shoppers find the best deals to close out 2021, we lead with cash offers available to shoppers at large, not those that require financing with the automaker or having certain qualifications (e.g., military or college-graduate discounts, loyalty or conquest bonuses). In calculating the overall percentage discount and pricing after incentives, we focus on the vehicle’s price range from the cheapest incentives-eligible trim level with no factory options to the priciest eligible trim with all factory options. We include the destination charge but exclude a few other items: taxes and fees, which vary considerably by region, and dealer accessories, which vary considerably by automaker.
Because these are factory discounts, they should be available to all participating dealers. As such, use them as the starting point for negotiations, not a reason to skip haggling altogether.
Incentives data come from automakers’ websites. Remember, our numbers are current as of publication for the markets we survey (generally Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles and New York). They reflect advertised customer discounts, not unadvertised factory-to-dealer cash. Discount financing typically requires qualifying credit, too, and incentives may vary by region and trim level; automakers may also change them later in the month. In sum: Your discounts may vary, so check with your local dealer for specifics.
