The fix involves a reinforcement that protects the ignition cylinder — the thing the key slides into in the steering column — and prevents its removal, which is necessary for the means of theft being promoted on social media.

The software upgrade attempts to make older Hyundai vehicles more resilient to theft by modifying their vehicle control modules to not only activate the factory alarm when locking the doors, but also a special “ignition kill” feature that prevents thieves from starting the vehicle.

Approximately 390,000 model-year 2013-14 Hyundai Elantra sedans and 
 coupes and Elantra GT hatchbacks are being recalled.
