Best car ever built in US
from Marion, NC
on March 2, 2010
I bought a 1993 Buick Century USED 7 years ago for a "spare" car. It now has over 200,000 miles on it and is still going strong. It doesn't use any oil and everything still WORKS on it!

Die Hard! Built to Last! i love my buick!

when i was younger i used to talk trash about the "old man car" but i was humbled when i ended up getting one in trade for my 81 honda with only 100k miles on it. when i first got it i noticed that it had pretty good accel. (V6 4 speed AT) and the A/C was so cold i would joke that i could "solve global warming by leaving it on with the doors open" most importantly i have had this car for 4 years now with no serious problems.
performance: good engine response, it has the 3300 series (based off the legendary 3800 series) which means great low end torque for passing and merging. the transmission is more on the economic side however, when it shifts to second its out of the power band and it wants to hurry into 3rd. 4th gear (D) doesnt engage below 50 and under accel u wont see it till 55 because its a 0.705 gear the engine relaxes at cruising speed. my only complaint is that the engine doesnt get enough air, a friend of mine hooked up a small blower to the intake and using the battery made and "electric supercharger" it added a little power but the big difference was the engine vibration was gone! had to remove it because it was too noisy but if i put a flip switch on it i to cut it off at stoplights i would do it again.
features: cup holders; these were made fairly well i could fit large cups in there no problem. map light; ever need to look at something without turning on the bright overhead light? this one pops out on the dash under the stereo perfect for a passenger to read a book while you drive. auto lock. not so important these days unless you frequent bad neighborhoods, when you put it in R or D it will lock all the doors so cant get carjacked
comfort: the seats are nice and soft with good support. strangely though, it has manual adjustable seats with a power seat back (normally most cars are either all manual or all power) the armrest is perfect for hitting the highway and setting the cruise and relaxing great for road trips.
Fuel Economy: this is the best highway V6 i have ever owned. i took it to the beach set the cruise at 65 and even after driving it around when we got there in the city traffic when i filled it on the way back it had gotten 35 MPG! thats better than some 4cyl cars and any modern v6! in the city its not that good only like 20-24 still better than most V6s though.
accessory reliability; keep in mind this car is over 20 years old, all the windows go up and down SLOWLY and the fronts need a helping hand going up. the A/C compressor died this year but hey it worked for 4 years with no maintenance whatsoever, probably my fault. the intermittent wiper setting quit 6 months after i got it, its probably a fuse or relay but i get by without that since it still works on lo and hi. thats basically it, everything else works fine
mechanical reliability: ROCK SOLID! this is the most reliable car i have ever owned and i have a 06 focus i bought NEW. no engine problems EVER! trans was rebuilt by prev owner at 72k miles so no problems there either. i havent had so much as a dead battery, you turn the key and it cranks first time EVERY time. i had it towed once when the a/c compressor locked up and i had to cut the serpentine belt. this buick will probably last through the Apocalypse
maintenance: i had to pay the shop $500 before i got it for the alternator , harmonic balancer and crankshaft pulley that was replaced and the first year a fuel pump sending unit issue ($75) but since then its just been little things i got a tune up last year (new plugs, wires) and i changed the trans fluid at 115k (i always do every 15k for domestic AT) other than that just brakes tires and oil changes at the appropriate intervals.
overall: this is a great car, if you need power/ reliability /highway mpg the 93 century has you covered! also you can find them online for less than $1000 so it makes a good starter car. the only way it could be better is if it were a 5 speed, if it had a clutch it would be the ultimate sleeper and you could be
