One of best ever made

This is my 2nd explorer and I wish the newer ones were as good, I hate to make a change and have put it off waiting for them to produce a truck equal to this one. It has everything and the newer models don't. I replaced the entire front end (tie rods, ball joints, etc) at 125K but I have abused this truck for years with heavy loads and rough roads. However I've changed the oil regurlarly as well as anti freeze and flushing raidiator. My wife has complained about the ride in the backseat but I've never ridden there so I can't say. However i've replaced the shocks a couple times to help the ride and they needed it everytime I had it done. You can't find a full size concole like this one and I love the lighting on the running boards.

wonderful car

Well worth it the money. Plenty of power for towing with the V8. Keep up with required maintenance and it will last

Keep up with the Maintainence

Heater core started leaking at about 130,000. Shoulda kept it flushed. Other than that just routine stuff like brakes and front stabilizer links. Both very easy for the do-it-yourselfer. Love the Eddie Bauer, wouldn't own any other version.

It's an OK vehicle

I bought this vehicle used w/ 73k miles. I had a minor problem with the idle air control which made the vehicle really loud in the warmer days. That replacement part was about $80 at Autozone. Currently my AC compressor went out to where I had to disconnect the clutch portion otherwise it will get stuck and burn my engine belt. Obviously the vehicle is not the best for acceleration because of it's weight. It does a descent job off-roading except when the terrain is really rough. I don't like the way they had the center console because the top portion where you rest your arm is cheaply made. I decided to leave it off after constant breaking. Overall, this vehicle is pretty good for a used. I just wish I had it new, might give it a better rating.

Pretty good suv

Bought new and has 150k. Led's on radio and direction/temp readouts have failed. Tie rod went bad. The timing chain tensioner has failed twice. The auto door lock system has a current problem. Top of the line shocks and tires helped bone jarring rear suspension. Reliable otherwise, holding up ok

Keeps on Running

I have a 98' Explorer XLT and I want it to die so I can justify buying another car....but it just keeps on chugging along...

i will never buy a explorer ever again

I bought this car used about a year ago and must have spent about 3500 fixing all the problems. at first it was just running rough and had a tune up then my break line was leaking then I noticed when I started it up in the morning it would run really rough and going on the highway it seemed like my transmission was going but no it was my head gasket and was told by about 10 car lots that they would not even consider doing it on this year explorer because it was too difficult. I ended up having to get an engine and I was to get rid if this piece of junk as soon as I can I will never get a ford again.

Great SUV

My wife and I have a the 99 XLT 4x4 Model and we have been driving it for a year now, no major problems just the normal rotor/pad/shocks replacement. I have no complains on this SUV at all, very smooth on and off the road, lots of power and great in the winter. Everything works fine and has not failed.
