Expert 1996 Ford Thunderbird review

our expert's take

Difficult to imagine that this portly coupe owes its heritage to the slim and trim ’55 Thunderbird, which, over the years, grew by leaps and pounds.

If you stick around long enough, you get to be called an icon and the liverspots become a symbol of survival. The ’96 Thunderbird is an icon.

Though carrying a proud name, the rear-wheel-drive car for years has been burdened by having to justify its existence in a front-wheel-drive world–especially in the Snow Belt.

With traction control ($95), ABS ($570) and dual air bags (standard), there’s little reason to fear treading on the highway when the seasons change, but getting that message across to the public is no easy task. Ford, however, has spent no time or effort trying to educate consumers.

In the fall of ’98, Thunderbird will visit the fountain of youth and borrowthe Taurus front-wheel-drive platform. In the process the ‘Bird will shed somesize and weight and be limber and nimble enough to provide the ride, handling and performance of the younger Pontiac Grand Prix.

It also means that those who rely on a T-bird to tow will have to move up to the rear-drive Ford Crown Victoria, though it, too, is earmarked for the Taurus platform in 1999.

The T-bird’s attraction now is the 4.6-liter, 190-h.p., V-8, which allows you to move from the line with little hesitation and tow a small boat or camper. The 17-mile-per-gallon city/25-m.p.g. highway fuel economy rating is decent.

One drawback: you feel compartmentalized in the front seat by an instrumentpanel that protrudes well into the cabin.

Base price of the Thunderbird LX we tested is $17,485, a sticker held down by making traction-assist and ABS options so as not to force the factory to bump up the cost by $665 but rather put the blame for a higher sticker on thecustomer.

The list of options ($4,045 worth) took up more space on the window stickerthan the standard equipment. Consumers probably can expect to see more of thisploy by all automakers to keep base prices down and put the onus of higher prices on the consumer for choosing of options.

  • What's the word Thunderbird

My 1996 Ford Thunderbird with the 4.6 l V8 is not only comfortable but also has good pep despite having 289,000 MI, engine is dead reliable but the transmission is starting to go out. Once I get a new transmission there is no telling how many mustangs I can beat.

  • Most reliable and she sure gets the looks yet

I would sell it but like it better then my brand new new that cost me 60000 dollars. Ford motor company made a huge mistake when they stopped making this car.

  • It's outran every cop this side of Dixie.

For an old model, it's still pretty and comfy. It never gave it's owner much trouble, very dependable. Many people have come up and offer to buy it or maybe they were just hitting on me?

  • Worst Car Ever

This car was a pain. I spent more money fixing it than what I purchased for it. It spent more time in the mechanic shop than me driving it. Ford has to do better in building there cars. Making them more reliable and dependable for the everyday American. The parts for this car is non-existent and is very expensive to purchase if you can manage to find it. Honestly, it was a terrible car they ever built. Shame on them.

  • Take care of it and it will take care of you.

Reliable for the most part on long trips. Plenty of power and acceleration when well maintained, as with anything . Durable and enjoyable. a cousin to the mustang so I presume they have a very similar driving experience and part costs are about the same as a similar year model mustang gt, No doubt a favorite amongst real car fanatics. 8/10 for me, not bad as a daily driver but id recommended something with better fuel economy!

  • One of the easiest to work on.

I bought a 96 thunderbird that had some issues to say the least. I was confindent that with 131k miles it was something minor...and I couldn't have been more right. A simple change of spark plugs and wires had my 96 car running brand new..and it's fast. Easy to work on, fun to drive..I recommend most definitely.

  • Love My Thunderbird

I purchased my 19r96 Thunderbird new (ordered it from the factory). I have 88,000 miles on it and plan on keeping ii forever. Only major problem was the plastic intake manifold, which was replaced years ago.

  • beautiful concept horrible reliability

i fell in love with this car when i sat in it at the used car dealer. i could feel the power. loved the wedge look, comfort. i had sought a crown victoria under the impression it was built for cops so would be reliable. i knew ford had a horrible reputation for mechanical execution and reliability, and this car proved it to me. i loved the power, when it wasn't hesitating through the acceleration, or the trans wasn't experiencing normal twitches. to get over this stuff to go fast I'd just stomp down and it would rev and come through. but the engine light never went off. at 125,000 miles it needed 2 of its 4 cat converters replaced at $350 each, plus other problems. barely made it through one smog test, and then had the cat converters gave out plus a fuel system leak so i had to California retire it by the second smog test. if not for the huge constant mechanical drain (there was more stuff but i don't need to bore you), it would have been close to a dream car. we won't mention the plastic intake manifold that the previous owner had thankfully replaced by the time i got it. this car was like having a gorgeous girlfriend that is not only a 10 in looks but an 11 on the high maintenance/cost scale. in other words, impossible.
