If you get the chance. Buy an old jeep.
I bought my Jeep from my brother. Cheap. I always liked jeeps. I once owned a j10 keep pickup. I miss it. my lerados engine and trans were rebuilt. I definitely put some money into it. Well worth it. Great four wheel drive. Pulls anything. Snow problem. I live in Wisconsin. We never get snow. Yeah right. It starts on the coldest days. Rides a little rough, but it's an old jeep. Fun to drive. I've pulled alot of vehicles out of ditches with it. Friends mostly. My brother stored it in his shed next to his dog. Get this. Varmints filled the muffler full of dog food. That's a new one.

Dependable and Flexible
I owned this 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0 for 10 years, and to get rid of it was a sad day. It had power of a small V8, but could get you from LA to Vegas in one full tank. I could pack a studio apartment worth of stuff in it with the back seat down ( no furniture, of course). As long as I kept fresh oil in it , it rode as smooth as silk. I had a '93 rear transaxle as a replacement for the original one, and had no problems with it. It's extremely flexible as far as part compatability, but you have to make sure you get the right one since its such an open field . My only gripe with it was the cooling system, as you had to keep your eye on it so it would not be in danger of running hot. I suspect that the cooling fan/radiator design was not as efficient at dispelling heat due to its wide 2 fan ( 1 mechanical/1 electric) design. but once that is remedied with minor tweaks and sensor replacements, the truck ran cool even in the summer times ( a lower than OEM temp- thermostat didn't hurt either ;-) ). I sold it as a fixer upper once my engine lost its compression seals at about 360,000 miles. But I saved a lot of money driving the truck due to its low cost maintenance needs. I recommend this model as a fixer-upper for anyone looking for a cheap and reliable ride or an easily modifiable project vehicle.

The car that will get you through everything
This vehicle will never let you down. It is minimal on creature comforts and new tech due to its age, but the strength of its drive train , especially its versatile inline 6 cylinder engine, it was worth every penny I spent on it. basically, all it needs is water, grease, and tape to keep moving ( not literally , of course). the engine is lively and pulls with good, steady power all the way to its red line and past its top speedometer reading. You can make a trip to Vegas from LA on 3/4 tank of gas on a clear road, and still ride around town for an hour after. After over 26 years since its production, all of its electronic amenities still function. I admit, am no off roader, so I have not tested its 4x4 capabilities. But I have moved a car full of cargo more than half a dozen times, and it still powers on with great confidence. I would buy it all over again if could.

22 years old with 225K miles
I bought this vehicle years ago for my son when he moved away to California. He eventually needed to get a new clutch, and wanted to get rid of the vehicle because he was afraid that he'd start getting nickle and dimed to death because of the age of the car. I Never really understood fully, the logic of paying a huge down payment followed by huge guaranteed huge monthly payments for several years instead of maybe occasional big repair payments that may or may not keep coming up. The reality is that, if you replace your rusted radiator with a brand new one, the new one will fail just at the same time as one in a brand new car. Enough about that stuff though. My Cherokee gets about 20 MPG city and 27 highway. My motor has over 225 K miles on it and the compression is 133PSI dead even in all 6 cylinders!! Pretty nutty! No smoke and very strong engine! The mileage tends to go way up in the summer and down significantly in the winter. I live north of the guy in Co Springs... Because of my engine, I'm going to keep putting money into the Jeep and keep her running. Over the past 5 years, I've given her a new clutch, radiator, stereo, battery, windshield, rear door spring/shocks, valve cover gasket, some electrical stuff in the steering column, a fuel pump. . She's about to get completely new disc brakes all around. She will also be getting a completely new exhaust system as this one is shot. The A/C does not work, and I'm not sure what to do about that because I like to be cool and freon is getting less and less available. Not to mention, my recharge only lasts one season. The tranny/transfer works beautifully, but I may go play some games with it and beef it up. The motor, as I said is very strong and doesn't smoke or make any noises at all. In summary, The car vehicle has exceeded all of my expectations far and away!!!

My baby
I have a 91 cherokee laredo, white exterior, maroon interior. I received this as a first car about a year ago. It was in near showroom condition. When i first saw it first impressions were not good. Having no airbags i immediately decided the car would be my death. However, a week later we were inseparable. I absolutely love this car and would not trade it for anything. They are very heavy duty and tough while being quite comfy depending on the interior package you have. The handling is quite good and it blows through 6 inches of snow like nothing in 4 wheel drive. I have done nothing but some inexpensive preventative maintenance on it. After all, it is 21 years old. Overall, if you can find one that is in decent shape it is probably worth anything they are asking because these things go forever as long as you keep them maintained. I have never seen another one like it anywhere so i feel pretty exclusive behind the wheel. Very practical, fun, and i love it.

Classic 4.0L reliability and fun
Obviously, the guy from Co Springs wasn't talking about the 37k actual mile gray one. I must live on a different planet. What does he expect to buy for $500???? You don't buy a 20 year old Cherokee for "comfort", "styling", or "Interior design". You buy one because they are reliable, predictable, and they increase in value if you take care of the.

1991 Jeep
I tested this car. Not worth the asking price, worth maybe $500.00, another $5-600 in repairs needed to get it road worthy. Transmission and lines show leaks, valve covers show oil, brakes are in desperate need of replacement (there's a grinding in the rear, could be the brakes or the rear differential) rear differential leaks, interior is extremely rough, drivers window is broken out and the windshield is cracked along the full length of the bottom. Would make a good car for parts or restoration only.

An Off-Road Classic, A suburban friend
The first time i drove a jeep cherokee i was surprised by how it really feels like a sedan. i tested the four door limited version, with power windows, power mirrors, rear window defroster, cruise control and leather seats. the 6 banger 4.0 HO engine delivers all the power you may need in almost any circunstance. the 4wheel system is easy to engage and you can do it while you are driving. the rear seats have little leg room and can't be adjusted, but you can accomodate 3 passengers back there if they aren't concerned with been packed. the cargo area is eaten by the spare tire, but the folding rear seats give enough space to carry your groceries. the car handles well, having a soft power steering. the breaks where my main concern, you have to step on the pedal to stop moving, but taking on account that is a 17 years model, its still a good ride. if you like outdoor living and need room for groceries, then this is the car for you. if you are looking for a daily driver, then the cherokee's gas performance is far from good.
