Fuel efficient, gearbox need improvement

Chose CX-5 over RAV4. Have 5500 miles so far for 2 months driving. Vehicle strengths: excellent fuel economy (mine varies between 29-32 MPG depending on how much I drive on the highway), very good handling, very good brakes, good performance IF manual shifting mode is used. Weaknesses: gear often shift with a noticeable jerk even in auto mode, tire noise makes it impossible to talk at speeds over 50 mph on concrete roads, gearbox is definitely built for fuel economy so it is very reluctant to shift down, cruise control is outright dangerous - when road is changing from downhill to uphill the car can loose as much as 10 MPH from set speed. I have a GT trim and wish I could have it with manual shift - then this car will be almost perfect (except for tire noise).

Glad I bought it

I grew up in the '60s with the muscle cars, then switch to 4 wheel drive jeeps. Of course never used them for what they were designed for. Saw the CX-5 and fell in love with the styling and interior. Great ride, great gas milage (better than my 16mpg with my wrangler). Sold my 2004 loaded wrangler and bought the Touring with cloth and many other bells and whistles. Love the moon roof. Great car, good accelleration, great over the road ride. Go get one.

Best riding card I've owned

The Mazda CX-5 2013 Touring Edition, is a great stylish fuel efficient choice (gas mpg for this vehicle is right on or might avg. more like I do) if you are looking for a mid-sized SUV. The exterior is nicely put together, the ride is smooth, it's almost like driving a sedan. If you are worried about power like I was you will be pleasantly surprised with the test drive! The interior is put together well and is a very solid vehicle. There were some features I would have expected a new car to have but didn't. All in all, this is the best vehicle I've owned and would highly recommend it over other similar like models at other manufacturer's.

My First Mazda

This is the first Mazda that I've owned. Over the years, my husband and I have gone from five minivans to a Mini Cooper and, most recently, a 2008 Honda Civic purchased new. I was looking specifically for a crossover vehicle and my friend recommended the CX-5. I went to the dealers, test drove a CX-5 and fell in love with it. I was drawn to the gas mileage, but I also like the comfort and the Ipod capability. My Mazda is so new that I haven't even had the oil changed yet, but I am anticipating having a reliable car. Go buy a CX-5. You'll love it!

LOVE LOVE LOVE

I was searching for a crossover.. coming from a Mazda 3I. I needed more space.. but didn't have the budget to afford a big SUV nor did I want the low gas mileage that the bigger SUVs offered. I looked at the Honda CRV, Toyota Rav4, Hyundai SanteFe, Ford Explorer and the Kia Sorento. I wasn't crazy about any one them and found them to be mediocre. I didn't like that I had to buy 2-3 levels up either to get some of the options I wanted. I loved my Mazda 3 and never had any problems with it.. So I went to the Mazda dealership and test drove the 2013 CX-5. I fell in love with it immediately. It had all the features I wanted and were looking for and the gas mileage was simply unbeatable by any other manufacturer. I love the sporty look and the interior. I ended up purchasing the Touring with the Bose/sunroof package. I have never been happier with my decision and look forward to driving every day now. I would highly recommend test driving this car... I also plan on going back to purchase the Navi. Not sure why I turned it down originally but the price is decent, and I shall be going back shortly to get it installed.

Amazing value and fun to drive!

As a previous owner of a SUV, I had vowed to never drive this class of vehicle again. Mazda not only changed my mind, but developed the first compact SUV that is a pleasure to drive. The new Kodo design language that is exhibited with the CX-5 (and upcoming redesign of the Mazda6) is absolutely beautiful on the outside. The vehicle is well proportioned with a garage-friendly ride height. The actual dynamics of Skyactive technology as well as Mazda's design decisions as they relate to handling, producing a fun-to-drive product, and delivering value that increases marketshare are covered in gold here. Many previous professional reviews have knocked the horsepower and torque figures as being too low for a vehicle in this class. It has more than adequate get-up and go, even when ascending up steep hills. While you may need to apply additional pressure to the gas pedal to bring about the necessary acceleration, the engine is a 2.0L 4 cylinder/6-speed automatic combination that is focused on efficiency yet still delivers the necessary response when needed. This review is coming from a previous owner of a 2010 Mazdaspeed 3. One would think going from 263hp to 155hp would elicit some disappointment, but the reality can't be any further from the truth. The layout of the cabin is superb, road noise isn't excessive (even on the Grand Touring edition with the 19" wheels), and visibility, braking, and acceleration exceeded my expectations. The Technology Package provides a great deal of value in the Grand Touring Edition. The TomTom navigation looks, feels, and functions exactly as it would with a stand-alone unit. The Bluetooth integration syncs well with the phone and can pull in contact lists, recent calls, etc. I have not gone in-depth with the voice command functionality yet, but expect it to function as well as other reviews have stated. I've spent the better part of the past 5 months shopping the CX-5 against some of its domestic competition. The fuel economy of these competitive options don't match the CX-5. Running the numbers through some available fuel cost calculators, the CX-5 has the potential to save me over $1,000/year versus my outgoing vehicle, and fuel savings were estimated to start at $600 less a year versus the competition. You may have never considered Mazda before. You may think you need 200+ horsepower. You may be very loyal to a brand/manufacturer that has produced vehicles that have given you years of headache-free and enjoyable experiences. Honestly, you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least check out the CX-5. It's an absolutely solid value for everything included in the full package!

Out-worldly Great Car

This is my first Mazda, traded in a 2009 fully loaded toyota Rav-4 for a Fully loaded CX-5 FWD. The CX-5 has such a smooth comfortable drive. Features on the Nav computer are extremely easy to use. I love the IPOD integration system and Satellite radio. Bluetooth is over the top and stores all my contacts so I can call directly from the Touch Screen. Minor downside: tight fit on the shoulders; not too noticeable in city driving, but somewhat uncomfortable in the long drive; Take off is a bit slow IF you don't know the pedal. I personally have a lead foot, so for me the take off is very amiable when pushed to the right location. I still get great gas milage compared to my Rav-4. I couldn't be more in love with all the interior features as well as the amazing outside design. GO GET ONE. There's nothing overly negative about the vehicle, almost seems too good to be true, but its not. That's because I've never been so in love with a vehicle before. Vehicles driven: Toyota 4-runner, Rav-4, Mercedes C-280, Infiniti M35, Toyota Camry (all cars in my family or I've personally owned). Of all the above, CX-5 is the only one to put a smile on my face. Wow.

Great car!

The 2013 Cx-5 is my 2nd Mazda, I previously owned a 2004 Mazda Tribute that I bought new as well. When I was researching a new vehicle, I didn't specifically set out for a Mazda, but am very happy that I found the CX-5. Because of the Mazda loyalty program I got cash off the purchase price. Make sure you check the mazda web site for special offers before you purchase your car. The color of the car, blue, is so pretty and the gas mileage is EXCELLENT. I drive about 70 miles round trip to work each day and was going through 1/4 tank of gas a day, now I can go two days on the same amount of gas. The seats are very comfortable, the only complaint I have is the arm rest in the center console is very low and kind of far back to comfortably rest your arm. I stuck a travel-size pillow on top of it to eliminate the comfort issue. The blind spot monitoring is the greatest feature on the car, in my opinion. How have I lived without this all my life? I have the Grand Touring model that has bluetooth and navagation which are both nice features. The car is a good value and is sporty looking.

Replaced the Tribute

We purchased our CX5 Grand Touring to replace a 2003 Mazda Tribute ES. We have two kids and wanted a larger SUV, but the price, options and gas mileage were what attracted us to the CX5 Grand Touring. Some of the options we have: the Nav system, blue-tooth technology, heated seats, blind-spot monitoring, Sirius radio, USB port for an iPad, two zone climate control, 19" rims, moon roof, leather seats, and the list goes on...all for half the cost of a brand new Lexus RX! The most important feature to me is the ability to switch to the manual transmission mode. The automatic can be too quick to shift into higher gears especially going up moderate to high hills and I like to keep it in lower gears for a little longer. It makes up for the lack of horsepower. Additionally, we also purchased a cargo box for the roof and a bike rack to slip into the rear hitch. We've owned the car for one month (already took it to the beach and back) and have absolutely no complaints. I love driving it. My wife drives this car most of the time. I own and drive a 2005 Jaguar XJ8.
