great luxurious car

by boat from new york on Mon Jun 28 2010

i absolutely love this car. i bought it used while it needed to be repaired, and although there was a lot to maintain, it's a greeat car. EXTREMELY spacious. passengers always comment on how much room there is in the back seat. it has great features like memory seats, heated seats, locking glove box, back mirrors w/ lights, back ash trays, everything. its the classiest car iv ever driven nothing can really compare its even real leather. the acceleration is very good especially comparitive to its size! its verrry big but easy to get used to and so easy to dirve. my favorite its that the steering wheel is effortless to turn litterally i can do it with a pinky. the downsides: not very good on gas at all, on average 17 mpg. premium gas only 93 octane!! huuuge gas tank (25 gallons) so it cost alot to fill but it last w hile. overall i would get this car over any other. we have to get rid of mine cause theres too many miles and i just cant even think about getting another car that comes close to the eliteness of this car

I know what I like!

by Used Benzer from Beverly Hills, Ca on Sat Sep 09 2006

Bought the S500 used with 75,000 miles 6 months ago knowing that it needed a few minor items repaired which have since been completed. The car is a joy and entitled to all the respect and admiration usually attributed to it. You know - going in - that it's an expensive automobile to maintain, but with appropriate maintenance it will amortize itself nicely. Consider that I like the car and that I'm biased but I thoroughly enjoy getting into the car and driving it. It's all there - comfort - reliablity - respect. One final consideration - value - I'm into this car about $20,000.00 - a far cry from the $100,000.00 you're looking at for a new one. My $80,000.00 is out there in the market working for me!!

Mercedes w140 s class great value

by Autonotions.com from Central Florida on Wed Dec 28 2011

The w140 s is a great car and a great value. Available in several trim levels with both a six cylinder and V8 motors. The slab side s class is one of the prettiest and classiest looking s classes according to many including this writer. This is the last of the over engineered sedans with many great options for both comfort and safety. These cars are dependable, quiet, safe, and perform well for their size and weight. Sure acceleration, precise braking, and all the usual interior appopintments one would expect to find in the big Euro sedans.

1998 S 420

by Charlie Tuna from St. Paul, MN on Mon Jul 28 2014

Purchased at a very reasonalble price, sound body, engine and suspension, aftermarket parts available if you look for them. Fun to drive and fuel economy is exceeding expectations. I expect it will be a classic before I sell it.

MB W140 Series "S" Class

by X-Ray from Boston, MA on Mon Oct 06 2014

Classic looking, comfortable car. but up keep and maintenance costs are high. Get a late (to 1999), low mileage model. You'll be happy. But understand that there are lot of features which reply on on-board computers which have been only recently developed when the car was built. Some of the systems are not very reliable and are expensive to repair. One example is the electically retractable outside rear view mirrors.

Expensive to fix

by Doctony from Palm Harbor, FL on Tue Oct 31 2017

Car is great when running good. Not always the case. It's very smooth and comfortable. Car has almost 260,000 miles and the engine is powerful. However, parts are expensive and some mechanics are afraid of it.

Our Take on the 1998 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The Mercedes S-class is the top of the line, the type of car that in an earlier time would have competed against such American makes as Packard, Duesenberg, or Pierce Arrow. Sadly, no American car slugs it out in this league any more, leaving it to a handful of foreign marques.

What a pity. For this car is in many ways a modern iteration of what those fabled autos were: fast, secure, conservative, made of only the finest materials.

There are five ways to buy an S-class sedan. The "S" designation refers to the line of cars, in this case the Mercedes full-sized sedan line. The numeric designation refers to the engine.

The "entry-level" sedan is the S320, powered by a 228-horsepower in-line six... Read More
