This is not bad for my first car

First off this was my first car I ever bought and I think its a good first car its reliable and its really good off road I had minor problems with my car like a couple pieces of trim slowly falling off the doors but they are easy fixes but if you have a big family I think its a wonderful car I recommend it!

xxx!!! Do Not Consider!!!

Horrible! It eats wheel bearings, transmissions and the PLASTIC timing cassettes. We bought it for its good looks, at the time, but have since vowed to never buy a Ford product ever again. After putting 5k into the xxx, we tried to sell it, but ending up donating it for a $500 tax credit after dropping the price to $1,000 with no takers. If I didn't like you, I would not recommend it. That would too cruel for any human. I read reviews where people complain of other vehicles that have accessory or body issues (the mountaineer has those too) that I can deal with. The problem with this vehicle is the constant big ticket problems and unreliability. I have been straded more times with this xxx than all my other vehicles combined, and have been driving for 35 years!

Best Vehicle I Ever Owned

I've owned my 2002 Mountaineer for 15 years and have been extremely happy with the purchase. I take good care of my cars (regular maintenance, check ups, etc.) and it's been the most reliable car I've ever owned. Only major problem was the AWD gear went out after 10 years, but now that I live in Louisiana, I decided to take it out rather than repair it. With only 117,000 miles on it, I plan to keep the car for many more years.

Good second car

Purchased 2002 Mercury Mountaineer for my sister but kept the car after she received another one. It has plenty of space to transport a family group or family. The interior is nicely designed with a great deal of leg room and comfy seats. I fixed some transmission issues and vale cover gasket which is faulty in a car this age and mileage. Overall a good family car.

Great SUV for kids or cargo!

This has been a great vehicle. The rear two rows of seats easily fold down for when I need to transport furniture or bicycles, &c. It also easily accommodates seven passengers with plenty of room. Plus the separate rear HVAC system keeps my riders comfortable. The all wheel drive has been great in snowy winters. The solid V-8 engine is one that will never quit. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone who is looking for a comfortable and reliable ride for family, friends, or other precious cargo of an inanimate nature.

Horrible...

This car is an example of what I don't want... Yes the car was excellent in the winter. When nobody else could drive beause the snow was to deep I went right on through with zero problems. Great winter car !! Now here are the things that have went bad.. Rear struts, rear shocks, driver and passenger upper control arms. Driver lower control arm, stablizer bar, tow links, driver hub, passenger tie rod, starter, timing chain. It was cost after cost it was killing me. I'm only 23 I've had this suv for 3 years I've spent over 3,000 dollars in repairs on this car. Oh the best one yet tho is because last winter was so cold I opened my rear hatch and my rear window shattered out.. thank the heavens I put all the new stuff in because I wouldn't be able to afford all this done in a garage. I wish I would have had a better experience. As of now I sold the thing for 2,000 only had 128k on it. I now drive a 2006 lifted all black gmc sierra I LOVE THIS TRUCK !

Love it!!!

I've had it only a few weeks now. I drove a 2000 Ford Explorer and we were highly impressed with it. However we've been a one car family for a while so we decided that with 2 out of 3 children in school that it was time for me to get a vehicle. I did not want to drive a mini van so we settled on an SUV with 3rd row seating! I LOVE it! My girls can get in and out easily, the stuff that I had to do make it safe (new tires, oil change, alignment, etc.) adds up, however it is also one of those that if the previous owners had kept up on it the cost wouldn't have been so much out of my pocket right away. Solid transmission, solid engine, solid body - little rust but welcome to MN.) enough room for my 3 girls and a couple of their friends. Only con I have is that a forward facing car seat and a booster seat side by side can be a little tricky at times for a 6 year old to be able to fasten herself in at times as it can be a tight fit even for little hands.

Best Suv Ever

I bought my 2002 mountaineer in 04 and i loved it ever since. With only 25,000 miles on it this truck it checked off everything that i was looking for in a midsize suv. Its spacious, comfortable, reliable and my family loves it as well especially when it comes to long distance driving this truck will get you where you need to be in the most comfortable way. With 160,000 miles on it now the truck still runs as great as it did when i first bought it. This proves that if you take care of your car it will take care of you. Im looking forward to many more years with this truck and i recommend it to anybody that is looking for a preowned midsize suv.

To many issues

I just bought this moutaineer and on my way home the check engine light came on and the od light started to flash. I looked the issue up online and it's a common issue. then i was making tight turns and it felt like it was gripping. looked it up online and another common issue. then I was going down the road a day or two later and a hear a crack from the back of the suv. i get out and dont see anything. then later that night i see the passengerside is sitting lower then the drivers side. Broken spring. looked it up online and another common issue. I bought a pair of rear quick struts to replace them both. as i was taking it apart it was already broken at the top of spring and it broke on the bottom of spring as well. upper break was all rusted like it was broken for some time. then i replaced the other side and it was also broken at the top of spring. It could or broken sideways and hit the tire making me wreck. I can't believe ford never had a recall on the springs. The one i bought has the tow package. But from what i am reading online dont tow anything heavy! weak transmissions and they wont last! My rear a/c was making clicking sound. 32 dollar part on ebay to repair that. not to bad. also lots of poeple with that issue online. another common issue. as for the flashing over drive light and check engine light. the transmissions are known to have Solenoid issues. most tranny shops want to replac the hole tranny at a high cost. This isn't needed all the time. You can just replace the Solenoid Block saving a lot of money. I did this repair myself. Still didnt get all wheel drive gripping issue fixed as of review! These are known for having to many issues. If i would of known about all these issues I would of passed on buying one. now for the features. 3rd row seating is nice but never used it.
