Expert 2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport review

our expert's take
Our expert's take
By Cars.com editors
Full article
our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
Montero Sport was introduced in 1997 as a smaller, lighter companion to the Montero. Since then, the Sport has become the volume model as sales of the larger Montero have slowed to a trickle. For 2000, the Sport gets new front and rear styling, a new rear suspension and several other equipment changes. The Sport uses the same 107.3-inch wheelbase as the Montero but has a shorter body that Mitsubishi describes as mid-size.

Interior
Whereas the larger Montero seats seven, the Sport accommodates five. The rear seat holds three, reclines and folds forward for extra cargo space. A clamshell-type tailgate has a flip-up window on top and drop-down tailgate below. All models get a new center console with two cupholders and a second 12-volt power plug.

XLS and Limited models add a standard, automatically dimming rearview mirror with an integral compass and temperature display. If you crave leather, you have to opt for the Limited, the most expensive model, and cough up another $1,235.An eight-speaker Infinity sound system with a CD player is standard on the Limited and optional on the XLS.

Exterior
A new grille, headlamps, bumper and accents give the front a fresh appearance, and the rear has new trim. Fender flares and running boards are standard on the XLS and Limited, and they are body color on the Limited. You can’t see it without getting on your knees, but a new coil spring suspension replaces a leaf-spring setup at the rear.

Under the Hood
Mitsubishi has shelved the four-cylinder engine that was in last year’s ES models, so all Montero Sports come with a V-6 this year. On the ES, LS and XLS, it is a 173-horsepower 3.0-liter, and on the Limited it is a 200 horsepower 3.5 liter. Both team with a four-speed automatic transmission. The ES comes only with 2WD; all others can be outfitted with either 2WD or 4WD. The 4 x 4s and 2WD Limited come with anti-lock brakes.

  • 130K problem-free miles

I put 130K problem-free miles on my 2000 Montero Sport before selling it for a minivan. The thing drove like a small tank, but that's good in the sense that it felt solid.

  • Tough, capable truck

I bought this truck with 110k miles on it. I use it as a second vehicle to haul the dog around and transport anything that wont fit in my car. I have done some off roading with it, even though I have the 2 wheel drive version. It has good ground clearance. I have driven it for 30k problem free miles. Does everything I need it to do. So useful.

  • Very Versatile SUV

The Montero Sport has been reliable and I haven't had an issue with it until now. The transmission went out at 272,000 miles. But to be fair, it has only had the fluid changed once. But one rebuild later and it's ready to take on another 300,000 miles

  • Had a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport XLS

Had over 230,000 miles and the best car I ever owned. Only reason for selling was that my daughter bought me another much newer SUV and we didn't need three cars. In fact, sold to my next door neighbor of 13 years. This vehicle has the best looking body style of any SUV on the road and you can't find better quality than Mitsubishi steel and paint. I liked it so much that I found an excellent 2000 Model with 68,000 miles in excellent condition with showroom condition interior and exterior. I could not pass up an 18 year old XLS in this condition. Back to three cars again ... my friend needed another vehicle and it grieved me but relented and sold it to him. I can assure you I will never find another one to match its condition! Showroom perfect.

  • Fun summer car

If you want a car to take to the beach, or load up a portable fish house this is for you! She burns oil like nobody's business but this car has a ton of storage room. I was disappointed to learn after the purchase that is was RWD but if I didn't hit a deer with it I would still be driving that beauty.

  • Engineered so only shop/mechanic can chx plugs

I rated this vehicle average because I expect a vehicle to last at least 15 years before having to start replacing major components, this particular vehicle didn't make it 8 years before alternator went out and because manufacturers (INCLUDING THIS ONE) started engineering their vehicles to REQUIRE their service tech to do the simplest of repairs; it took me a full day to replace the alternator. I had to take the complete radiator, fan, and fan housing off to swap out the stinking alternator, matter of fact I'm rethinking my score but the fact is, if you like being able to work on your own vehicles DO NOT get a used Montero. So bad that you HAVE to remove the complete intake manifold just to change spark plugs. Now I'm mad all over, I hate that car, don't buy it unless you only drive Mitsubishi's OR have absolutely no choice.

  • Ye old Faithful

I bought this car when my Nissan got totaled in a crash. I bought it for a couple grand at a dealership and was quite hesitant as it had 184K on it. I am not disappointed. This car has been reliable and with routine maintenance I have kept this car running well and am well over 200K miles and going strong. This car is great.
