Expert 2011 Nissan Xterra review

our expert's take
Our expert's take
By Cars.com editors
Full article
our expert's take

Vehicle Overview

Nissan’s truck-based Xterra is geared toward young, active buyers — or those who want to appear that way. A standard 4.0-liter V-6 drives either the rear or all four wheels. Unlike some SUVs, it’s a truly capable off-roader, with an available new PRO-4X off-road edition. The other trim levels are X and S (the SE models are gone). Its competitors include the Toyota FJ Cruiser and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.

New for 2011
The new PRO-4X off-road model replaces last year’s Off-Road model and comes with standard four-wheel drive and a choice of manual or automatic transmissions. Other PRO-4X features include off-road tires on 16-inch alloy wheels, Bilstein gas-filled shock absorbers, roof-mounted off-road lights, hill descent control, hill start assist (automatic transmission only), locking rear differential, transfer case, oil pan and fuel tank skid plates, eight-speaker Rockford Fosgate sound system and Bluetooth hands-free phone system.

Exterior
The Xterra’s styling is evolutionary, mimicking the original’s design heritage. The Xterra is defined by its standard tubular roof rack and stepped roofline. All Xterras have short front overhangs — the distance between the front of the wheel well and the front of the SUV — and this helps in off-road situations. Exterior features include:

  • Optional running boards
  • Optional bodyside moldings
  • Roof-mounted off-road lights (PRO-4X)
  • Available 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels

Interior
Five people fit inside the Xterra. An available fold-down front passenger seat that allows for hauling long items can accompany the SUV’s standard 60/40-split folding backseat. Options include an upgraded audio system and a system of rails in the cargo floor. Interior features include:

  • Remote keyless entry, cruise control and auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Double-deck glove box
  • Easy-to-clean floor
  • Available leather-appointed seating

Under the Hood
Nissan’s 4.0-liter V-6 is the only engine offered. It makes 261 horsepower and 281 pounds-feet of torque. Mechanical features include:

  • Six-speed manual transmission
  • Optional five-speed automatic transmission
  • Available part-time four-wheel drive
  • Double-wishbone front suspension and multileaf solid rear axle

Safety
Standard safety features include:

  • Electronic stability system
  • Antilock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution
  • Seat-mounted side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain airbags for both rows

  • Great SUV!

Had a 4Runner before this. I don't find it much different! Works great! Will drive it as long as we can. It is comfortable and we bought it with 150km on it. Drives and runs like new.

  • This Hauss will never let you down!

I got this truck as a do all daily driving 4x4. It never had a major issue, maintenance was cheap and easy, i drove it from Texas to Michigan on 3 separate occasions with a roof full of luggage two dogs and my wife. Its comfortable, reliable and is equally capable, commuting, hauling kayaks or navigating offroad terrain. The thing just doesn?t quit. It?s a shame they quit making them because it?s one of, if not the best 4x4 SUV out there. There?s a reason these things are all over African desserts and the Middle East, because they can take the harsh conditions and keep going. Buy one if you get the chance, you won?t be disappointed.

  • Love our Xterra

Our 2011 Xterra is great! We had a 2003, but it was totaled in November 2017, and really enjoyed that vehicle enough to search out a newer model.

  • Awesome SUV

This is our 2nd Nissan Xterra and it meets all of our wants and needs in an SUV. Size, style, comfort, reliability, performance and towing power are all there. We have owned and driven our first Xterra for 9 years and the current odometer reading is 228,000+ miles. The Xterra is an AWESOME SUV. Our daughter owns and drives an Xterra, too. We are VERY disappointed that Nissan has discontinued production of this vehicle.

  • Great Value

We have owned our 2011 Xterra since new. It has been my wife's daily driver and she loves it. In addition, we've used it for trips to the lake, family vacations, and driven it all over every square foot of our farm.

  • Best decision ever

Got this vehicle due to my location and driving conditions (on a hill in snow). I needed something so I could get to work no matter what the weather and feel safe doing it. This vehicle definitely does that and more. Easy to clean surfaces and spacious. Kid and dog friendly.

  • 2011 Xtra!!

This truck is amazing, I owned a 2001 Xterra and sadly traded it in 6 years ago (regretting the decision every day). I waited long enough and am so so so happy to have an Xterra sitting in my driveway again. It was the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned, most comfortable ride I have ever had and just all around AMAZING!!
