Cheap materials, but reliable
I chose this car over its competitors because it had more features for the price and had a good reliability rating. I've put more than 140,000 miles on it with no major repairs, just regular maintainance and servicing of items that wear out over time, i.e. battery, starter, fan motor, etc... Working on it is easy, relatively inexpensive, and parts are readily available. I still get around 35 mpg without even trying. I have two main complaints, 1.) It's way underpowered, and 2.) Saturn used cheap interior materials (headliner fell down long ago, sunvisor material is falling apart, etc...). I give it a marginal 4 out of 5 due mostly to the bulletproof reliability it has exhibited, and to the ease of maintaining and performing my own repairs.

My 2nd Saturn
I had a 94 sl2 and it was involved in a rear-end collision. I got this 98 sl2 and its the best yet. It has almost all the options (ABS, pwr lcks and wndws, cruise, traction cntrl, remote entry, engine block heater, etc.) its much more smoother and reliable than my 1st saturn. This one doesn't burn hardy any oil, getrs great MPG (about 250mi on a full tank depending on how i drive and if i use air) its a very nice car for the money. I've had to do nothing to repair it besides maintainance. I would recommend it to everyone!

98 SL2 5 speed manual
I purchased a rebuilt (wrecked) 1998 Saturn in 1999, it has been great, with only a few minor problems: shifter linkage; drooping headliner, slight shimmy(every car Ive owned has had this) and odometer light. The SL2 engine performance is exceptional. I went to this site to check the rated horsepower (124 hp) as I wanted at least this hp in my next purchase. I couldnt believe it was so low ! I definately recommend the standard trans for anyone that wants a little power in a 4 cylinder engine.

2 transmissions and an engine later
Ran great for 3 years until I got to almost 100M and then the transmission cracked. Fixed that and 6M later a piston rod snapped. And now another 20M the factory rebuilt transmission has worn down to the point where reverse doesn't work and there is slippage going into second and third gears. Automatic transmission.
