Explore the 2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara

"Spunky" compact SUV, but with some odd "habits"

Vehicle impressed us with its comfort, overall quietness, handling, and ability to run away from a "lot" of other vehicles (with 5-speed auto trans). Mileage averages 18-20 mpg (mixed urban/rural driving). Wouldn't call it the handsomest SUV ever built, but seems to make other SUV owners jealous for some reason -- Have plowed through deep snow, driven it over 12,000 ft. passes, pulled (small) boat trailers, gone up old mining roads, it pretty much takes it all with aplomb. (but like reviews say, not a "lot" of ground clearance, so need to be careful) Then you have the "not-so-well-thought-out" annoyances: For a while, we fought the infamous "battle of the headlights" -- the bulbs are really hard to reach, burn out "a lot" (probably due to poor connectors), etc. -- Finally just ordered some replacement headlight housing "assemblies" from Amazon, came with neat little spring clips to hold the bulbs in, got some jumper kits to make better contact with the bulbs -- it's been a year or more since we had a bulb go out... Kinda hard on front brake pads, make "sure" you get the ceramic type (parts stores will try to sell you "original" metallic pads, but Suzuki themselves changed to ceramic pads later on) Heater controls are kind of flaky; mostly heat & A/C work great, but sometimes heater gets "confused", blows air out where it's not selected, fails to defrost, etc. -- some of this is due to the cabin air filter, which really needs to be regularly changed (it collects the most amazing variety of dirt, leaves, bugs, small birds, etc.). Recently (172,000) experienced an impressive "systems failure"; apparently the "speed sensor" gave out, set the check engine light, set off the ABS system, the ESP system, wife was afraid to keep driving. Finally located a speed sensor (one source in N. America apparently), that cured a lot of things. But still having ABS and ESP issues -- shop thinks its because one or both rear ABS sensors are quitting. "And", it's now setting a code that the 4wd Low switch circuit has failed. So I don't know if the car got struck by lightning, an EMP burst, or just decided to commit "SUV-a-cide" -- this may take full diagnostics to sort out (shiver...). Or maybe the "CAN bus" has turned into the "CAN't bus" (bad joke, sorry) "But", it still motors along like nothing's really wrong -- (would nickname it "Herbie" but that name's already been taken)

I would buy this vehicle again if I had th option!

I actually had purchased the vehicle a few years ago not knowing much about Suzuki. But ended up having the vehicle for over 5 years. I then gifted it to a friend upon my moving out of state. I must say this was one of the most comfortable vehicles I have ever owned as well as reliable. The original reason I purchased it was because I used to own a Geo Tracker (before Chevy bought and branded them). It had a Mitsubishi engine so I went looking for its Big Brother which turned out to be the Suzuki with the same type of engine. Mitsubishi engines are rated at three to four hundred thousand miles, so I knew that if I got this vehicle it would last forever. And it did! I beat the heck out of this car, put over 200,000 miles on it and it is still in good enough condition to be gifted. It's still running two years later, perfectly fine. It is just a shame that Suzuki stopped selling their vehicles in the states. Perhaps the reason they couldn't sell any more of their vehicles is because they were built too well... We may never know. ?

Reliable, affordable, small

This Suzuku is great for a single person, couple or very small family. The car runs extremely well with regular maintenance and gets great gas mileage. It's easy to maneuver and affordable to take care of. The interior is great for an individual or a couple. Otherwise, adding multiple adults in the back or a carseat makes the car a tight squeeze for anyone.

Most reliable car I've owned.

I purchased in 2009 and it has needed nothing but tires, oil change, brakes, normal stuff. Looks great and is very reliable. So sad they Don't sell them in the US any longer! Would strongly recommend!

4x4 will climb a tree

These things are a stout little ride. They are nimble on the highwsy but are quite capable off road.

Love Love it!

I brought this fantastic car 2nd hand, and have owned it for 3 years and absolutely love it! It is very comfortable, easy to drive, plenty of room with 2 small children with baby seats in the back, I can just fit another person in the 3rd seat in the rear. So reliable. I wanted this car as I have had many un-reliable cars previously, and this one just keeps going. I look after my car, which I think helps keep it going strong, and it has absolutely no signs of slowing down. I have noticed I have gone through a few sets of headlight bulbs, but it is just such as easy fix as my local Repco store fits them for me for FREE!!! As a last resort I was able to tow our small camper trailer, and it was a breeze on the highway. I love how it is higher than sedans, helps my back with putting children in and out of the car everyday. I also courier around my nana on her shopping day, and it isn't too much effort for her as it is a little higher. I also love that I can drive on the beach, that just tops the car off, as our family is a 4wd family, this was a superb choice for our 2nd car. I would definately reccommend this wonderful make of vehicle. After my aunty seen how versitile this vehicle is, she has just brought the new model and is loving it. I have 220K on the clock, and will have this car for a long time to come! I love Suzuki!

Most reliable car I've ever had!

I must say that I am more surprised that anyone to say this is a great car. I bought it brand new in 2007 (Luxury Edition) and it still is great in 2016. Its the longest i've ever kept a car and the first that is over 100K (122K to be exact). Sure it could use a bit more power, but it fools you with its RPM/Exhaust so its ok, I didnt by it to race. No mechanical issues and everything still works. Even the paint still looks brand new. I take care of it and switched to semi synthetic oil after 50K and to full synthetic at 90K. i've also gone to 89 octane (plus). I've gone thru 3 sets of tires and the only annoying thing is the headlights seem to burnt out faster than usual. i think I fixed that by re tightening the socket a bit. Plus I've gotten used to the rear door opening, makes for plenty of space. I would totally recommend this car and just too bad they don't make them anymore. It running so well is the only thing keeping me from buying a new car

Love it.

I love this car. It looks nice and is reliable. The ride is rougher than others but it's not too bad. I average about 23-25mpg on the highway, but it depends on how I drive it. The only complaint I have is about the headlight bulbs. They seem to burn out fast. I still see older grand vitara's on the highway, and i hope to get 250K out of if.

Worst new car I've owned

Tires wore out in less than 20k miles, front brake caliper and rotors failed at 10k miles, tire pressure module defective since day one, anti lock module failed at under 20k, rear suspension sounded like a solid axle with no springs or shocks when hitting bump. Poor layout for interior storage in rear, only about half the useful space of my 2001 Forester. Dishonest dealer and no help from Suzuki. Bought new for warrantee, day to find fault, no parts in inventory, return week later, sometimes fixed, sometimes not, then start process over. V 6 felt weaker and rougher than 4 cylinder Forester, manual transmission shifting poor feel for front engine rear drive vehicle, vaguer that cable front wheel drive transmissions.
