Expert 2020 Toyota Avalon Hybrid review

our expert's take
Our expert's take

our expert's take

What Is the 2020 Toyota Avalon?

The Toyota Avalon is a large sedan that seats five. It’s powered by a standard 301-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine that pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A gas-electric hybrid drivetrain is also available. Competitors include the Kia Cadenza and Chrysler 300

What’s New on the 2020 Toyota Avalon?

Following the Avalon’s 2019 redesign, the 2020 model offers a new performance-focused TRD trim level. The TRD version gets a lower, performance-tuned suspension, unique wheels and tires, bigger brakes, a TRD-tuned exhaust system and various cosmetic changes.

What Features in the 2020 Toyota Avalon Are Most Important?

All Avalon models get the Toyota Safety Sense-P suite of active safety features, including forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is also standard. Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity is standard, but Android Auto isn’t available. The top-of-the-line Touring trim gets an adaptive suspension.

Should I Buy the 2020 Toyota Avalon?

The Toyota Avalon is a very good choice in a shrinking large-sedan class, and it should be on your consideration list if you’re looking for big-car virtues, like a roomy interior and big trunk. If your preferences include a car with these attributes and a hybrid drivetrain, there are even fewer competitors.

  • Unbelievable luxury, reliability, and economy!

I have owned 25-30 different vehicles in my life including 10 Toyota or Lexus vehicles since 1978. The latest have been 2 Camry hybrids and 2 Avalon hybrids. Quite simply, my 2020 Avalon Limited hybrid is the finest luxury automobile I have ever owned. My 2015 Avalon was the 2nd finest... LOL. The car is quiet, smooth, comfortable, unbelievably reliable, and gets 44-46 MPG for me in normal weather conditions.

  • Great car that will be with me for a long time

I chose the Avalon over BMW & Lexus because of the interior style. I wanted the touch screen large and up on the dash and the Avalon had the best positioning. The style is great (not a grandpa's car) and I get complements on it often. I have owned since new with no mechanical issues. The heated and cooled seats are a must. The heated steering wheel is a must (I live in New England). Handles great and has plenty of pep for the way I drive. I will have this car for a long time.

  • Very reliable car with high resale value.

Very stylish comfortable quiet. Good handling on the road. Plenty of cargo space. Has all kinds of electronic driving aids. Plenty of power and features such as if you fail to break it will assist you. Great cameras you can see all the way around the car.

  • My Toyota Avalon is one first class car!

The Avalon is the best equipped car that I have ever owned. I had an Avalon a few years back and WOW what a difference! Vehicle upgrades and new technology makes this a great buy for the price. Unbelievable comfort and ease of operation with a smooth ride and outstanding JBL sound system. I told a friend of mine if this car does not have the option you want, you don't need it.

  • Love the car with 1 exception

I agree with the other reviewers but while traveling, I rented a Volvo S60 for a long highway trip. The Pilot Assist steers the car on the freeway and with the radar cruise control, this car is practically self driving and made the long drive effortless. My Avalon has LDA, Lane Departure Assist, which basically warns you when you drift over a painted lane marker and provides limited steering correction. What really bothers me is that I learned after the fact that Toyota has a similar system as Volvo called LTA, Lane Tracing Assist, but it is only available on the RAV 4 and the Corolla! If I hadn’t rented the Volvo, I would be blissfully ignorant, but after experiencing this amazing feature, I do feel some disappointment that my top of the line Avalon lacks this steering system.

  • Safest car I have ever owned

I wanted a comfortable and good driving sedan with the most up to date safety features. This car exceeds my expectations and is a truly quality car at a reasonable price for the many safety features. It is also a beautiful auto and gets great mileage with plenty of power.

  • My wife won't stop driving it

I bought this for my wife for our anniversary. She makes up excuses to go out in it. The interior feels luxurious. The heated steering wheel and seats have already come in handy. The heads up display is fantastic and useful. The lane assistance and other safety features help keep her safe. Currently, she's averaging just over 45 mpg, so she's getting great mileage out of it too. It performs very well but does lack some oomph. Overall, incredibly satisfied.
