Great car for what it is-
Mine is 2003 with 198,000 miles. AT, PS, PB and A/C. I get 42mpg on most every tank. I run High mileage Full Synthetic Oil and change every 5,000 miles. The PS and AT fluid is still clean and clear! Fun car to drive, cheap to insure, and great on gas. It has a Timing Chain, not a belt that has to be replace every few years. These cars were designed to be less expensive, and you only paid for what you wanted put on them (rear defroster, PW, PL, Spoiler, etc.). If you can find one in decent shape, BUY IT!

Very reliable and great trunk space.
Yes, 2003. So no power windows, fancy electronics, bells or whistles. 4 cylinders so you're not getting 0-60 in 8 seconds, but the Echo is certainly not under-powered. Comfortable, and good room in the back. Seats fold down, handy for carrying bulky items. A real trooper.

The car never quits.
Love my Echo - I bought it used in 05, and we're up to 200k miles with no engine issues. Air conditioning quit last summer but I live up north so only miss it for about 8 weeks a year. The only "major" repair I've had to do is a complete rebuild of the exhaust - Again, 6 months of snow and salt per year may have contributed. Mine is the bare bones base model - the speakers and audio in the car are not great. Perfect car if you want to buy a car and not spend thousands making payments or doing constant repairs. Great gas mileages too - always more than 35mpg.

Excellent daily commuter, but nothing more.
The toyota echo is a wonderful car for city driving and daily commuting short to medium distances, but with it's lack of cruise control, and it's demanding accelerator, it's best left to city driving and commutes 30 minutes or shorter.

Awesome Little Car
bought it new in 2003 - everything manual!! I will hit 318,000 miles by next week and it stills runs great. Starting to eat oil and the gas mileage has dropped a little it around 28 mpg on the highway. The front hood has taken it share of dings and it's starting to show some age. Still has plenty of "get up and go". It has conquered many Houston summers!!!

My Lil Echo,Echo,Echo
Bought my Echo on vacation in Vegas to replace my van whose tranny had crapped out.Fell in love with it's small exterior size but roominess inside. It had 155k on it when I bought it.Just drove 1700 miles from Vegas to Iowa.High of 40mpg and low of 34.This was through the mountains with the air on at 75-80 mph. Snappy little 1.5 motor is just plan fun to drive even around town.It is a bare bones car.Crank windows,no power windows, seats,or locks.Only thing I missed on 1700 jaunt was cruise. But when you add the fun factor into the equation I guess I really don't need any of them.On top of that just plain reliability. I really don't understand either why these didn't sell well in the U.S.I guess beauty is really in the eye of the beholder.
